BSOD

My system is not completely down, but every now and then I get the dreaded blue screen of death. Recently I cloned the drive using Acronis True Image 10 and the problems started after that. Several times I had to put the old drive in and clone again, but once I got lucky and re-booted and it loaded up no problem. On the times I couldn?t re-boot it would not even load into safe mode. I did not look at the error message in detail and have no idea what I would be looking at if I did.

My question is, if it happens again what is the best process to follow and what is the best process to correct and locate the problem. I know that a dump file is created but like I said, I wouldn?t know what I was looking at from line one.

If anyone has a process to follow I would be interested in knowing.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

You could try running the Windows Automated Repair from the XP disc, and see if that helps.

Also, you may want to run a memtest. Faulty ram could (likely) be the cause of your problem as well.

What does it say on the blue screen? That usually helps determine the cause. Also, on WinXP if you let it send an error report after the "your system has recovered from a serious error" dialog, sometimes the Microsoft page that comes up tells you if a specific driver is at fault. Another possibility is a super-dusty heatsink making the computer overheat...

Folks, thanks for the info, I know I can rule out the dusty heatsink, I just cleaned the case with compressed air not long ago. I will try to send the error report and also try the memtest and/or Automated Repair if it happens again.

Any other ideas are appreciated also.

Thanks
