BSOD while trying to install Windows 7

I cannot get past the starting windows screen that leads into the pick your drive to partition screen. It shows loading files twice, then starting windows and BSOD.

Stop code is 0x8E (this code mentions something about a driver or video adapter?), RAM has been tested (each stick) using memtest86+ (I booted it on a usb) for around 11 hours each - No errors.

GPU - Used- XFX Radeon 6850 xxx edition (factory oc'd)

CPU - New - I'll explain further down

Mobo - New - MSI 970a-g46

RAM - Used- PNY Optima 2x 4GB

PSU - slightly used- Corsair HX850

SSD- New- Samsung evo 250gb, changed the ACHI in bios settings

ODD - New - generic asus dvd burner

SATA cables were purchased New.

I have ran linux/ubuntu (using the bootable usb drive/iso) as well and received the Black screen of death on that as well. Kernel exception not handled (i think it was).

I also thought maybe it was my boot cd for windows 7 (which I have used before and it worked as intended) so I tried a usb bootable version of Windows 7, same error occurs. I'm also downloading a direct Microsoft DL to test out another version just to be sure.

I had suspicion of the video card being the problem at first, but I feel it's actually the Mobo. When I tried using an old HDD, the stop code changed to 0x7F (IIRC this code has the Mobo as a potential verdict?). I also have two completely new cpu's, one is a FX-4300 and the other a X3-450.

The X3-450 was inserted first (since I had received it first in the mail to test out the Mobo). The Mobo would not boot Bios when the FX-4300 was tested on it.

I'm still not 100% sure, but my guess is the Mobo...

How do you have the hard drive controller configured in the BIOS? MSI doesn't have a lot available on their website, so maybe you can tell us some more about the options available.

Also, are you installing in UEFI or legacy mode? I have heard that installing 7 in UEFI mode can be a bit tricky.

What CPU? That mobo is one of the "sparklinators" If it's any kind of 95-125w TDP CPU...you're in trouble.
Set to IDE in BIOS. 🙂

First I would like to say thank you for replying!

I'm taking some pictures to explain some of the questions better than I can about the BIOS!

I think both CPU's are 95w, If I had picked a FX-4350 it would've been 125w due to the enlarged cache (iirc). I have read that these boards don't handle 125w CPU's well (there are charts you can find through google, don't have the link).

Sadly, I had not known about IDE and AHCI when dealing with the SSD, so at first when it was crashing to begin with the peripherals was already set to IDE XD

How do I know if I'm installing UEFI? Other than messing around in the BIOS the next screen is shortly a crash (in regards to Win 7).

I'm glad you mentioned hard drive controller, I don't think I can find that. I only read about setting the drive that will be used to SATA connector 1 on the Mobo. I'm not sure if there's any BIOS options?

I tried to make a short album:

Most of the pics for the Tab MSI settings, the last 2 pics are when you click the OC tab. Quality of pics isn't the best. I missed a pic of the "integrated peripherals".

Also, when I tried loading an official MS windows 7 x64, a different error appeared 0x0A I'm not sure what to think

Listed cause for 0x0A:

"This bug check is issued if paged memory (or invalid memory) is accessed when the IRQL is too high.
The error that generates this bug check usually occurs after the installation of a faulty device driver, system service, or BIOS."

Edit: I'm sending it back tomorrow, thanks again.

Considering you still have this option, I think that is the best approach. I have had 2 MSI boards in my lifetime, and 1 of them bit the dust after about 2 months, the other came on a Compaq machine, and is still running fine, but the most untweakable board I have ever used (my Lenovos have probably 10x the tweakability).

I know some people have had the best of luck with those boards, but it seems you and I are not those people.
