BSOD when playing DVD's - why?

I have a Delta 12x DVD ROM which works perfectly (in my old system!).

I have just re-built my system (see bottom of page) and have found that although my DVD ROM works fine for accessing CD's or installing Programs from a regular CD it produces a BSOD whenever I put a DVD movie into the unit and attempt to play it 🙁

There is nothing wrong with the actual DVD unit as it worked perfectly each and every time in my Andara "Meatybones" system.

What causes DVD players to produce BSODs?

I am using the same Leadtek WinDVD 2000 software that I originally used in my Meatybones system.

The only thing I can think of that I might have changed is that perhaps the DVD is now a "slave" drive as opposed to a "master" drive in the original system. Is this critical to the "DVD" operation?

Many manufacturers reccommend setting the DVD as a master device, mainly for performance reasons they say. Maybe make it master on the secondary IDE channel and see.......

Yep - I'll do that later tonight when I get home.

It's just really a question of why accessing "DVD" data vs "CD" data makes any difference that I'm puzzled.

Surely the data transfer rate is not affected by the master/slave setting?

I will need to change my CDR to slave from master also as it is on the same IDE cable.

I'll post the message after I get home - sorry you posted while I was out and I had not sent the previous reply 😉

I have a Delta 12x DVD drive... man, I hate that sucker. I don't know if it was the software (PowerDVD 3.0) or the drive, but too frequently the computer would freeze when playing DVD movies, or BSOD. Either way, it drove me nuts enough to where I bought a standalone DVD player, haven't had a problem since. 😀

I'm not sure why everybody complains about the Delta DVD ROMS - I guess if you get the problem that I am having then yes the feeling will be prety negative.
Truth is that I know it works perfectly in my other system so there is nothing wrong with the actual drive itself.

I agree that it is not good that this situation occurs in the first place - maybe my opnion will change if I cannot get past the BSOD - just about to test it out in the next 30 mins or so 😎

Yes that's that problem rectified - set the the DVD to master and CDRW to slave and all is well.

I'd still like to understand why setting a DVD player to slave causes a BSOD when accessing DVD files as opposed to using it normally with CDROM files 😕

Well guess what! Happy as I was to see the DVD working again - although my Liteon (Buslink) 16x10x40 is detected in the BIOS and diplayed in the boot up screen and actually accessess the CD roms that I put in there - it will not read or do anything now that i have set it to Slave 🙁

Currently I have the following set up:

IDE 0 Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm (MASTER) WD 60GB 5400rpm (SLAVE)
IDE 1 Delta DVD (MASTER) Buslink CDR (SLAVE)

Any ideas - I never have any problems normally 🙁
