bsod/registry upon boot up

my friend is telling me he is getting bsod upon boot up. he's installed winxp using the dell xp disk that came with his laptop... more than once. I was sure that his issue was windows related but now i'm not sure. he's ordered a new hard drive... can a bad hard drive cause this typep of problem?
