BSOD on XP setup

While trying a repair installation of XP I get a stop 0x000000CE after reboot. The error is with vdiskbus.sys which seems to have something to do with sysinternals software. I vaguely recall installing something from them in the past which I certainly never use.

Is there any way to uninstall this now? If I boot I automatically go to XP setup and can't do anything but wait for the BSOD. I can't boot into Safe mode either. Is there a way to kill vdiskbus?

You can boot into recovery console and rename it if it exists in the c:\windows directory tree. Otherwise you can boot with a BartPE CD and do the same, no matter where the file might be.
