I have a computer that had tons of viruses on it, not to mention the PSU is going bad.

I got rid of all the viruses, and can get the computer up enough to work on it (bought the new PSU but not received yet)

So, I went to update Windows.

The first and only major update came up as NET3.5. The update failed, restarted, went to Update and search for other updates other than NET, and then got the BSOD. I cant get into the OS

Therr error code suggests I update the HD controller, but how do you do that, and more importantly, how do you do that if you cant get into the OS, not regular, through safe mode, or command prompt or LKGM, this is XP Home.

It stated the following for stop 0x7B:
Update the drivers for your hard drive controller. If the drivers to your hard drive controller are outdated, incorrect, or corrupted then the STOP 0x0000007B error will likely occur.

Note: If the STOP 0x0000007B error occurs during the Windows setup process and you suspect that the reason is driver related, be sure to install the latest hard drive controller driver from the manufacturer for use during the installation of the operating system.

Note: This will likely be the solution if the second hexadecimal number after the STOP code is 0xC0000034. (which it is)

Sounds like you may have a HDD full of errors. Plus a failed update also screws with the system. You may need to do a repair install of the OS. If you actually did have a virus of 2 on the system your best bet would have been a full wipe and reinstall.

Removal of viruses can leave a damaged OS.

If you really want to keep using the PC, the fastest solution would be an XP Repair Installation. That'll allow restoration of the disk controller driver and will overwrite most Windows files (although not some of the Registry).

You'll have to re-install any Windows Service Packs or Updates that aren't on your XP Install CD, but, in this case, that's probably a good thing.

Ditto. These issues from a virus can have you going in circles for days / weeks and then you will still have to reinstall.

Of course the hard drive could be tits up also. With a reinstall you will know much faster.
