I got a BSOD a couple days ago but I hadn't set my computer to not restart when there's an error so I couldn't read it. Just a few minutes ago I got it again while playing Counter-Strike: Source. This time I had disabled auto-restart.

The info is:

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

STOP: 0x0000007A (0xC03DDD38, 0xC000009D, 0xF774E2A0, 0x087A8860)

SCSIPORT.SYS - Address F774E2A0 base at F7746000, DateStamp 41107b4b

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete

My computer info is in my sig. It'd be nice to get some help on what it is before I call Alienware Tech Support, because I'm not too fond of the reliability of their service, and the difficulty in communicating with Costa Ricans.

Thanks.

Stop 0x0000007A or KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
The Stop 0x7A message indicates that a page of kernel data was not found in the paging (virtual memory) file and could not be read into memory. This might be due to incompatible disk or controller drivers, firmware, or hardware.

That was direct from the MS support page. Sounds like it might be a problem with your hard drive, maybe some spyware or a virus...

I just got the HDD replaced recently.

I'm really tired of dealing with tech support and a messed up computer.

The error exiplicitly says it's a problem with scsiport.sys.

You can send me the c:\windows\minidump folder and I'll take a look at it, and run MPSReports (see my .sig) and send me the resulting .cab file (and do the other stuff in my .sig - I need the URL, etc.), but based on what's there, you might just remove all non-Microsoft add-ins that impact the disk environment (Alcohol 120% and any "imagedrive" style software) and see if the issue goes away.

Thank you for the reply and the information. Do you have an e-mail address where I can send the minidumps?

Again, thanks.

EDIT: Say your e-mail in the sig, haha. Sorry. I'll send them in a bit.

Please include the dumps, the .CAB file, and the thread URL and your AT alias in the communication.

I don't see much more than just the scsiport.sys issue, so make sure you've done all XP updates, make sure any SCSIport using devices (ie the IDE RAID controller) have the very latest drivers from Silicon Image, Inc., and remove any devices, like the Nero ImageDrive you have, that link into the SCSI chain. Then tell us if you can still reproduce the issue.

Also, you're five revisions behind on your BIOS. Here's a link to Asus (http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us) that might get you started, but you'll probably have to search a bit from there. I typically suggest running the latest BIOS, but I'll leave it to you to evaluate.

Same story with your SIS drivers - yours are from 2003, latest are from 2005. http://www.siliconimage.com/support/sup...sults.aspx?pid=63&cid=3&ctid=2&osid=4& should get you started.

So, update those disk drivers and see if the issue goes away. This is from your System event log.

I uninstalled Nero. Now I'm going to update my BIOS, but I've never done it before. I downloaded the .BIN file for the correct BIOS, now how do I install it? Also, what SiS driver should I install for a SATA hard drive in non-RAID?

Do you really think that these three things will clear up the error?

One more question: what motivates you to help people like this?

ALSO:
I'm getting a new Blue Screen:

0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x861BTB10, 0x861B1C84, 0x805F9F88)

And another memory dump. I'm e-mailing you the

As far as the BIOS goes, someone with an Asus board will be better able to help you; typically you download a BIOS flashing utility from the manufacturer right around the same place you got the .bin file, stick both on a floppy or USB flashdisk, boot from it, and apply it, but check on Asus' site for directions, or ask here.

You should install the same driver you already use, which is a 3112-based chip.

Given that you're getting completely different dumps which point to different things, please confirm you have no overclocking on your system whatsoever, and please confirm you've done all Windows updates while you're at it. *ALL* of them.

As far as why I help people, I'm sickened by some of the tech support suggestions that are commonly posted on message forums (not necessarily here - AT's better than most) that make suggestions that have absolutely no basis in reality and have nothing to do with the problem. People make wild guesses on what the problem could be and then post those guesses.

I've seen posts where the registry was corrupt - and people suggested that the poster do all kinds of oddball things having nothing to do with the problem whatsoever. Hours and hours wasted for what was a simple problem that could be solved quickly and efficiently with just a little help.

I've seen more problems blamed (incorrectly) on malware and such. Absurd.

I've seen people reformat, reinstall XP, reinstall the same bad drivers, and have exactly the same problems, because they don't know how to troubleshoot and relied on bad advice.

The gist of it is, if there's a bluescreen involved, there's a memory dump involved, so stop everything else and get the dump analyzed before doing anything else.

Sorry ... that's probably a bit more than what you were looking for. :)

No, that wasn't at all more than I was looking for. Thank you a lot for your service.

Buuuuuuuut... my computer is really pissing me off. I'm almost positive all settings are at normal... except my RAM was at 2-2-2-5 instead of 2-3-2-5 which was the auto. I just changed it back to auto. Maybe that caused the second blue screen, but the first one was before I changed the timings on the RAM.

Do I actually have a serious problem here?

Do you have the latest BIOS installed?
Did you update the disk driver from SI?
Do you have all Windows updates?
Do you have the latest version of all of the drivers on your machine?
Can you reproduce this problem at will - for example, in safe mode?
Looks like you have or had Motherboard Monitor on your machine; that also hits hardware directly; you might get rid of that too.

Obviously, and unfortunately, I can't point to exactly what the issue is with these dumps. Given that they point to different things, to me this looks like a hardware issue. An easy way to test, if you have another hard drive lying around doing nothing, is to install XP on that drive and see if you develop these same problems with just a basic install of XP (without any third-party drivers - ie just XP itself plus the Microsoft updates, and your NIC drivers if you must.)

Try swapping out some hardware like RAM and hard drives and start fresh. Let us know if you are reproducing these error messages after swapping and reinstalling.
