Hi,

I am currently running Vista 64 with a 8800gts 320mb (XFX XXX) e6600 (OCed by 10%) and 4gb of RAM.

The first time I ran Company of Heroes the computer froze and became completely unreponsive. The next time I tried it ran fine.

The third time it went to a BSOD just after starting a Skirmish. My 8800gts is running at 100% fan at 60 degrees idle. It hasn't crashed yet in other games however I only installed the new graphics card (8800gts) and the extra 2gb ram a day ago (I also installed a brand new copy of the OS).

I was wondering if it was overheating - Speedfan reports System: 55 degrees
CPU: 49 degrees
AUX: 59 degrees
Core 0: 62 degrees
Core 1: 60 degrees
IDLE
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Joe

It's hard to diagnose without knowing your motherboard.

But try running it with 3GB of RAM, even if it kills the Dual Channel configuration.

BTW, your idle temps seem high - mine idles at 44-45C for Cores 1/2, and ~60C is the Orthos load for the cores 1/2.

Thanks,

Its a P5W-DH deluxe - I think its more likely temperature than RAM - I fogot to add to the OP that I took out a fan when taking out the old graphics card (1950xtx). And I remebered I didnt put it back just now :)

I cant remember where it was - its a TOP MOTOR dynaeon industrial fan with a 3 holed plug. I can provide a picture if needed.

My mistake :)

Thanks,
Joe

I don't know your motherboard, but make sure to disable the "Intel Speed Step" and "C1E" state in BIOS. Let the CPU fan work at its maximum RPM.

And double check in your MB manual how to re-install the fan that you have removed. Add a Side Panel fan if necessary.

Good luck!

BTW, make sure that you have completely removed all the remnants of the ATI drivers. But you said that it was a complete OS re-install, right...?

Yup - its a brand new installation - I think its a 120mm case fan but Im not sure where to put it - the manual only describes the CPU fan. Does it connect straight to the mobo? Im hoping this will make a difference but will it cool it down 10+ degrees?

Thanks again,
Joe

If, in fact, it is a 120 mm Case Fan, I would strongly suggest installing it ASAP. There are holes in the back of the case, normally located above the card slots, with a grill-like punched holes.

If the hot air from around the CPU and the case in general is not exhausted out of the case, it might cause severe overheating of the components, including the CPU.

There are pins on the motherboard to connect it, just check the layout of the motherboard in the manual. It is usually a 3-pin connection, described as Case Fan Connector 1 or such.

Good luck!

Great - thanks! Everything is running 10 degrees cooler - however the AUX is reading at 125 degrees

A wrong reading or is it time to turn the fan around?

Thanks,
Joe

Rear Case Fan - Blowing OUT.

Top Case Fan (Blowhole) - Blowing OUT.

Side Panel Fan - Blowing IN.

Front Fan - Blowing IN.

These are the general rules of airflow in the computer case. If you directed the Rear Case Fan to blow the air in, you should reverse the airflow direction.

125F is still a little high - but as long as it is not 125C. But 125C would not be possible, I think...

You can try to place a fan inside your case, directed on the Southbridge, and/or punch a hole in the Side Panel and put an 80mm fan Blowing In.
