BSOD at startup--"vxdldr" error

I wasn't sure which forum to put this in, since I didn't know if it was an OS problem or what.
Anyway, computer boots normally until it goes to the desktop. It briefly shows the desktop then immediately BSOD's and complains about "vxdldr" problem. If you "press any key" to get past it, it hangs at the desktop but does not show the desktop icons. It will boot when in safe mode, however. Please let me know if I need to post more info. My knowledge in this area is limited, so many thanks for any help!!
