BSOD after the windows 7 logo!

so about two weeks ago I bought an ASUS UL30VT-A1 laptop.

it's a great laptop.

then two days ago, in the evening, it started taking me about 2 minutes to make a new directory. right click - new - folder... then a 2 minute pause with windows explorer showing "not responding", then it finally makes the directory. even in firefox i would type something and then it would pause for about 10 seconds then start going again.

then yesterday i restarted my computer, and now i get a bsod right after the windows 7 logo (or during it). it doesn't even stay on the blue screen, it shows for a split second and reboots. so i go into windows recovery and try to repair the installation. it finishes, but still a bsod. so i choose the command prompt option and go to C:... tells me the parameter is incorrect. can't even roll back to a restore point because recovery won't detect the drive and the windows installation. it just says "Unknown on unknown".

what now? what's going on? help would be greatly appreciated 🙂

thanks

First, run a memory test.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Start pressing F8 on your keyboard.
  • This will open advanced boot options screen.
  • Click Esc on your keyboard while you’re in the advanced boot options screen.
  • You’ll be taken to the Windows Boot Manager screen.
  • Press Tab on your keyboard to move to the Tools section of the boot manager screen and then press enter to start the Memory Diagnostics.

Could also be a dying HDD. If you know the manufacturer of the HDD, they should have some sort of testing app, like Seagate's Seatools.

i tried going to c: again in command prompt and it tells me that it can't because of an i/o device error 😕

This.

The pauses you were getting when trying to make a new folder and with firefox were probably the HDD having to try multiple times to read a marginal sector.

EDIT: Your newest post pretty much confirms it. Witness the bathtub curve of HDD failure rates!

i knew it in the back of the head that the hard drive's dead, but didn't want to admit it 🙁

crap. should i send the laptop back to J&R or should i send it to asus? getting a replacement from J&R is probably cheaper, no?
