BSOD after SP2 update Windows xp oem aaaarg

I just spent he past 1 1/2 hours re-stalling my friends Dell machine with windows xp oem. Went thru the whole windows update. Then finally did the sp2 windows update.

Now the computer gets bsod selecting the safe mode or last known configuration does not help.

I am in the process of repairing the installation (34 minutes to go)

Now the question is should I even try to install sp2????

I will make an image of the partition just before sp2. I usually make an image after all the updates are done. I never had any problems with sp2 in the past. Of course I am used to using a sp2 integrated windows xp pro disc.

SP2 nay or yay?

will he still be able to get udates without SP2??

thanks

I wanted to use his dell oem disc to make it legit.

Did not want o keep on going to his house to do updates for him (latest legitcontrol)

I wouldn be able to use his serial if I used my xp pro with sp2.

Plus I did not have a copy of Windows xp oem with slipstreamed SP2

if you get him the student edition of windows xp pro there is no need for any legit checks
updates like normal with it, if you get the student edition
just throwing it out there

you can slipstream his oem version with sp2 and it'll work.

Are you doing the SP2 update through Windows Update or downloading the SP2 network install and running that?

Ive had better luck downloading SP2 and then running it, then going back to WU and getting the remaining updates

I was doing it thru windows update.

Its up and running now after a repair, with minimal sofware installed, had to leave his house will return some other time.

I downloaded the SP2 and will install it this way rather than thru windows update.

Will need to image the partition first to avoid anymore waste in my time.

I heard a lot of horror stories with SP2 but never experienced it myself. So I guess the lesson is IMAGE first before any service pack install. Roll back does not work after sp2 install.

Thanks
