Back in December 2009, IDC predicted a so-so 10.3% growth for the PC market. However, following the record results achieved by PC-related companies, the market intelligence group revised its estimate and almost doubled the previous figure - 19.8%. Unit wise, desktops should grow by 8% to 137.6 million units, while mobile PCs should continue their exponential growth to 217.2 million units or a grand total of 354.8 million "classic" computers.

Not a great period of growth for desktops, though. I don't know how long we'll keep counting mobile x86 devices as PCs . . . I guess we'll keep doing that so long as they mostly use hand-me-down tech developed for servers and desktops.

Depends on who "we" is.

If "we" is anyone trying to spin hype into pushing up P/E ratios of our favorite x86-industry related businesses then you can count on "we" to keep spinning the growth story ad nauseam.

If "we" is BSN and any other site that makes its bread and butter on page impressions then you can count on "we" to continue to use rampant hyperbole in headlines such as "the PC is dead!?" because people will click such links just out of mental "says who!?" reaction.

Yeah, pretty much. Sometimes it seems like this article is intended for no purpose other than to kick sand in the face of Steve Jobs and his followers. Anyone who was particularly put off by Jobs' various assertions to the effect that the PC is dead or dying will just love clicking through a BSN article that says otherwise.

20% growth over what is the question. How far down are 2009 sales compared to the pre-recession peak?

The only reason why people buy a pc is a mac is too expensive

there are other reasons as well. for the work I do, mac is totally useless. my colleague has a macbook pro and it takes him 10x harder to do the same stuff I do and eventually he would just give up and move to the common pc (pentium 4) to get the job done faster.

the only thing i like about macs is their design. the operating system is garbage.

What kind of work are you talking about? (I have never used Mac before)
