I don't think the frequency due to extreme overclocking with dry ice or liquid nitrogen is a useful figure.

The 7 GHz overclock is nice, but not really surprising. Sandy Bridge was peaking at around 6 GHz only because multipliers stop at 57.

What I'm impressed with is the fact that it even booted with a BCLK of 112 MHz. My 2500K starts flipping shit above 102 MHz or so.

That makes sense in desktops, but they can't afford to take a chance on mobiles. Timeline slip when advancements are solely needed are indications of unavoidable problems.

It looks like even in an alternate universe where Intel has succeeded in bringing 10-15GHz processors, they would still need to worry about smartphones and tablets encroaching from below. I can even say the whole shift to performance/watt starting with Core 2 was a necessity in allowing post-2006 PC market to grow, and giving Intel a better chance for success in smartphones/tablets.
