A really long time ago I played with openbsd, but eventually settled on Linux. I've just setup a FreeBSD 4.7 box and decided to give it another shot. Two things I'd really like to do though are find easy ways to keep ports up to date and keep all the system's patches installed. I've found documentation on doing this, but its all sort of a jumble. It looks like cvsup and a cron job may be the best thing to keep ports up to date. Anything that might be better? How about installing security patches? I still haven't been able to completely understand how they release advisories/patches...

I've seen this but it hardly seems like a convenient way to find out what patches are applicable for your install. ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/CERT/patches/ I'd really like to have it automated too like every night check for patches.

Any advice would be appreciated while I'm trying to google my way to some good answers 😉

There is a program or something for FreeBSD to keep ports up to date, but I really dont know what it is called offhand...

As far as checking for patches goes, join their security mailing list.
