bsd killed my cdrom?

i just tried to install freebsd (after which i realized i knew nothing about it) and tried to put mandrake back on, but now my cdrom is not detected at bootup properly anymore. the bios recognizes it but will not boot from the good ol el torito cdrom that it has done so many times before. the indicato light does not even go on to show it is trying to rad from the drive.

granted it is a creative32x and many people hate em, but it has been very nice to me so far. i got it nice and cheap last year and have been pleasantly surprised.

any ideas? i reset the cmos and boot from a floppy, but still the cdrom seems dead.
