BSD Backup options

Don't know if this is the right forum, but here goes...

I found a decent deal on a DLT1 drive recently, and I've attached it to my FreeBSD box. Now I'm looking for the best way to perform backups of other networked systems as well (2x Win2k, Redhat 8, occasionally a laptop).

The biggest problem is that the BSD box (and one of the 2k boxes) is attached to the rest of the network via homeplug (can't drill holes in this house -- we're renting) that gives 14 mb/s best-case.

Anyway, so far the options look like:

1) Performing a dump to tape; the other systems can be backed up by using ntbackup.exe or tarring important files and dropping them on Samba shares (or rsyncing from the Redhat box) so that those files are dumped as well.

2) Doing the same with something like BRU, which offers a few more features.

3) Using something like Amanda or Bacula that's aware of the remote clients and (in Amanda's case) seems to be sensitive to slow network issues.

Anyone have any advice here? What would you choose, assuming punching holes through the wood floors/sheetrock/ceiling were a no-no?

How hard / easy do you want to make it for yourself ?

Try solution no 1 , as you suggested , If if it's too clunky move on to the next solution
