Now that I have your attention, and I'm SURE I DO have your attention. Let's talk about..................well, NIPPLES!

As we all know, there are many different types of nipples (I imagine you can think of several) and they come in many colors and shades.

Some tend it get harder when you twist them just right, but the nipples WE will be discussing are ALWAYS hard. Still they DO need to be twisted from time to time and you can really piss of the owner of the nipples if you twist them WRONG! These nipples can also be CHANGED to a different type and or color!

Of course I'm taking about SPOKE NIPPLES! Specifically bicycle spoke nipples.

As many of you know, I work in the bike industry and have for quite some time. I'm also a Master Wheel-smith, and I thought I would share a bit of wisdom with other cyclists out there. Did you know that one of the biggest weight saving you can make on your bike (and one of the most noticeable) is in your wheels? This is rotational weight, which is why it's so noticeable. It's like the flywheel on a car, the heavier it is, the more energy it takes to get it moving, also the more energy it takes to STOP it. Did you know that probably 90% or more of bicycle wheels have chrome plated BRASS spoke nipples? VERY VERY heavy! So the next time you want to upgrade something on your bike consider getting ALLOY spoke nipples. The weight difference it DRAMATIC. And it really doesn't cost that much. The regular aluminum colored nipples cost a about $8.50 per 100 (My cost! ;) ) while colored ones run about $22.00 per 100 (My cost again) Most shops sell them @ around .25 or .50 a piece. Though you WILL need to get your wheels re-trued after replacing them, unless you feel comfortable doing it yourself.

Plus it gives you the opportunity to say NIPPLES! ;)

Yes, use alloy NIPPLES, also light hi-end tires and thin RUBBER tubes.:D

More ppl should try to lace their wheels or at least true them.
I don't use a truing stand, I've done both on the bike.:)

You got me on that one.........

I have a hybrid bike, somehow I doubt changing the nipples on it will do much for it's weight. :p

Thanks for the info but I'll stick to the type of nipples that get hard when you :p them. ;)
