Are there any current browsers that run well on a 486?

I have a 486, and I would like a browser that at the very least isn't a big security risk, and I would also like to be able to view as many recent Web site design technolegies as I can. The problem is, something like Netscape 6.01 runs INCREDIBLY slowly, griding the hard drive constantly (by the way, I only have 16 MB of ram. The most you could ever need a few years ago!). If Netscape's requirments are anywhere on the website, I couldn't find them. :-(

Anyway, I'm running Win95, and I'm looking for a low-requirments, small-footprint browser that will get the job done without making lots of (known) security breaches. Netscape has an archive of their old versions, but I'm worried about security and viewing features.

Thanks!

The only browser I can think of for you is Opera. It's very small, especially when you install with no Java support, so it should be able to run on your system. I don't know the minimum specifications for Opera, but I don't know of another browser for Windows that is lower on the resources it uses.

I second using Opera. I used it on my P100 with 16 ram and it was very fast compared to IE and Netscape. I say give it a try on the 486.

Opera is free if you don't mind the banner ad on the upper right of the browser. If not, then I would say go with Netscape 4.7. It's their most stable version and has no issues going to secure sites and such.

Opera for sure...

Avoid Netscape 4.x or higher it has become wayyy to bloated to run on a 486. I do like Netscape but it has become a cow...

Opera would be nice...

kmeleon is another small browser, perhaps not
on par with opera, but i've not had success with either. both were buggy -
opera was actually quite slow. kmeleon is smaller than opera and has
ie-type interface.

one more small (and skinnable) browser is ciphernet. i found this one
to be the most stable but not any faster than any of the other alternatives
