browser can't connect but I can still ping?

I had a recent problem where FF/chrome (on my desktop) won't connect to the internet but I can still ping to outside websites, the network connectivity still says 100mbps, and I can't connect to the router. All other computers work fine.

I ran malwarebytes and avira and nothing was picked up. so i rule out virus.

I installed a new video card over a month ago but this seems like a really odd problem to be associated with a video card. the video card is one of those silent ones with just a heat sink. could overheating be the problem? it is summer.

i installed sp3 a few months ago and this problem occurred last week... again the connection is weak.

I can't connect to the router

That's the lowest level problem to attack.

Run IPCONFIG from the command prompt. Type the default gateway address that is listed by IPCONFIG into the address bar of your browser. Does that bring up your router's setup page?

I did do that. i typed in the 192.168 number into the browser and couldn't connect. that's what i meant by "i couldn't connect to the router". but my laptop will connect to the router when i type that in.

Sounds like anti-virus or firewall issue. I kept getting that recently using Avast. Thought for sure it was firewall related but nope, Avast. Try disabling all the junk and they try your browser. If this works, then just enable one at a time to figure out which one it is. In my case, until I figured out the culprit, I just rebotted which reset the Avast.

I ran into something like this a few weeks back and was about ready to do the atomic bomb solution and wipe everything but owner wouldn't have it. Took the HDD out and scanned with Mcafee and found something like 24 trojans on the drive.

The full instruction is go start---run---type cmd---and then enter, in the subsequent dialog box,
type ipconfig /all and then enter. Please note the space between the g and /.

Then you have some information to write down. Then you can go into network connections, make sure your various protocols are present and checked. And sometimes the problem is as simple as rebuilding your winsock or repairing a connection.

And on my simple network, I set my connection statically rather than dynamically, which keeps all the computers on the network on the same page if an intermittent glip screws anything up.

In troubleshooting, its important to know what trees not to bark up as you eliminate trees to bark up one by one.

it's been a week since i've had this issue. I reinstalled video card drivers last weekend and it's been good since. That connection seems bogus to me though. I do remember that when the web browser could not connect to the web, I also could not connect to my router when I typed in the 192.168 number.

problem came back tonight. not sure why. i tried repairing the connection and nothing happened. i dug into the network properties and found some test on the intel card i was able to do. it passed all tests except one. it said no wins server was installed. no idea what that means. a reboot still fixes everything.

I'm having the same issue. Just started on Monday, hadn't downloaded or installed anything recently; in fact the computer had been shut down completely over the weekend, and it was working before I left.

In addition, many programs give me pop-ups saying they have stopped working, presumably since they can't connect to the internet when they expect to. I can ping websites, ipconfig shows a valid IPv4 address, but neither browsers nor other online applications can connect.

If anyone figures this out, I would really appreciate some info!

Download the microsoft network monitor. It is really it to get running and do a simple capture of your network traffic. You don't have to worry about all the details of the various packets... but you will be able to see what IP's the NIC is trying to connect to and if it is getting a reply.

You just run the monitor, start a capture, try to load a webpage, then stop the capture.

I had an issue with Avira webguard killing my internet connection and had to disable it. I saw that nothing was going through from my PC.

It really sounds like you guys have a firewall issue. Either uninstall, or completely disable ALL firewall related software, Norton ANYTHING, McAfee ANYTHING, Symantec ANYTHING, Avast, comodo, doesnt matter, if it is any type of "Antiblahblahblah", disable it or remove it and see if it clears up the issue. I had a Vista machine recently that had a HOSED install of Norton 360 on it. Soon as i removed the program from the machine, the computer could surf absolutely fine. Typically it means the firewall is blocking outbound port 80, and in most cases, ping and many other programs or commands will still function because they aren't on port 80. You can always re enable or reinstall anything you remove, but that's where my money is for these issues almost every time.
