I know there must be a few machinists around here. I've got to replace my POS calipers soon. These things are going to have to pass ISO inspections yearly. Which brand holds up best? Which hold up best between digital and dial types?

Any idea how much it costs to repair these things, if they do fall out of tolerance?

LOL, the last time I held dial calipers was in the mid-80s. I liked my Mitutoyo then but I have no idea at all for current recommendations. The Browne and Sharpes I had were a nice set of micrometers and I've owned some Starrett tools but I think they were mostly gages.

Wow, brings back the memories. It was nice to have a toolbox with everything back in those days, access to a machine shop, and the knowledge that if you needed anything, you could just make it. :D

These days you have to have your tools calibrated. If they don't pass, tough shlt, you have to buy new ones, or pay to have them repaired. Makes sense to cough up the dough for good ones. From what I've found, Brown & Sharp seems to be the undisputed king of the dial calipers. Don't know about the digitals...

If I were asked the same question about indicators, I'd say to buy Interapid without hestitation. Just don't have the same experience with different calipers.
