Brown says he'll pull attack ads if Whitman does; Whitman refuses

LONG BEACH -- At a remarkable forum attended by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his two potential successors, Democrat Jerry Brown said today that he would stop running negative TV ads if opponent Meg Whitman does the same.

"No problem,'' Brown said. "I will take down any advertising remotely construed as a personal attack."

No deal, said an obviously flustered Whitman, who was down 13 points in the latest Los Angeles Times/USC poll.

To the boos of the audience at the annual Women's Conference sponsored by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and wife Maria Shriver, Whitman said that "people need to understand'' Brown's failed record as governor and mayor of Oakland.

Many of Whitman's ads attacking Brown on those fronts have been widely criticized by news organizations and the non-partisan factcheck.org as false or distorted. The question was poised by the forum's moderator, "Today'' show host Matt Lauer. It was the first time Schwarzenegger, Whitman and Brown had appeared on the same stage together. And the meeting was expected to be more than a little awkward.

Oh, well. Too bad for California.

Campaign ad spots are pretty much all half-truths. They are propaganda, Madison Avenue creations disguised as information for voters. All of them should be ignored, all the time. The DVR is one of the greatest inventions in recent times.

If all republicans took down their negative ads, they wouldn't have any ads at all to run! ;)

It's funny... Here in Indiana, just about every ad I see that could be an attack ad is sponsored by some democrat organization. I've fact-checked a few of them and they are just short of flat-out lies... While the majority of the republican ads around here point out the lies in the other ads without attacking the candidates.

Partisan much?

Most of the attack ads on *both* sides come from outside the official campaigns, so these pledges don't mean shit. Brown knows that, he's a damn fuck for getting the partisan hacks like yourself to spread the story.

From what I see, nearly every attack ad on *both* sides are taking situations completely out of context. Hell, we have an attack ad, I don't know what party affiliation it's with, a county official is running for state senate, and the attack ad is hammering her because when she began as a county official the unemployment rate there was ~3% and now it's ~12%... as if it was county politics that caused the unemployment...

But when you sit here and bitch about Republicans while claiming Democrats to be of higher morals, get a life, seriously.

I'm on my phone so I am not going to try to link any, but the ones that I see most often accuse candidates of wanting to impose a "23% tax increase on everything you buy, busting Hoosier budgets"... Referring to the candidate supporting a fair tax... The ads don't say anything about how it would replace all other taxes. There have been a couple more about random issues, but it seems like that one is on every other minute about republican candidates.

If Whitman could think quickly on her feet, she'd have said "Hell, anything true I say about my opponent's long record in public service is going to sound like an attack ad."

The add where they use meg whitman and arnold quotes to show how they say the exact same things is one of the best adds I've seen in a while. Cracks me up everytime hearing arnold saying something in his extreme accent and then hearing Meg Whitman parrot the same thing . For the record I dislike both candidates and feel either way most of california is screwed. 40 million people and rising is too many for any state to handle.

The Democrats here are running ads trying to convince people that their opponent is a registered felon/drug dealer/druggie.

He had a false charge where he was charged with cocaine something a long time ago, and the charges were dropped/whatever.

Real classy there, Dems!

if most attack ads on both sides come outside of the official campaigns, why bother running attack ads at all?

Same thing in Denver area.

Attack ads on the 23% while ignoring that other taxes would be reduced or what the tax is about.
But the ad implies an additional tax over and above what is presently in place to the consumer.
And the targets are all Republicans (incumbent or otherwise)

Rand Paul was doing the same whine in a recent debate. Frankly, I disagree-it is YOUR job to explain your positions. Here in CT a GOP group is running an ad accusing Blumenthal of supporting an XX% tax increase on energy (I forget the percentage but it was large). If you are astute enough you can figure out they are talking about cap and trade-something already regionally instituted in the Northeast reasonably successfully. To label cap and trade as tax increases is unfair (it ignores the subsidies and trade portion), but that is Blumenthal's job to explain.

Frankly I think attack ads are almost universally unsuccessful these days. The general public is smart enough to all (or nearly all) grossly distort the facts and all protray their target as someone less likable than Darth Vader. Personally I think they drive up the negatives of the person they are trying to support.

That'd be nice, but I don't know any evidence for it. The most recent data is still that attack ads are far more effective than any other.

Funny because Jerry has yet to take a stand on any of the major issues effecting California: Illegal immigration, budget deficit, state workers pension system going bankrupt, the over all economy and unemployment rate, etc.. In essence Jerry has run his campaign based on reacting to what Meg says but never stating anything new or concrete.

Then again the nature of running a election campaign is to directly state how a person would be a better candidate for a position in government then the next person in line. Thus pointing out the pro's and con's of yourself and how the person would be totally unqualified, ineffective, etc... compared to yourself. If Jerry wants Meg to stop her ads against him then effectively he is saying that he wants her to give up on her campaign and hand him a easy victory.

Edit: Also as others have mention Jerry also knows that he or Meg can continue with negative ads via third party and thus increase the slime factor without having to official respond.

It's the Alvin Greene strategy - the less voters see me, the less voters hear my plans, the more they'll like me.

I crapped in my toilet and it smelled bad, real bad, candle bad. I flushed it and five minutes later it smelled like the giver of live.

I'm not sure I've even seen an attack ad on Jerry Brown, maybe one, but I seriously hear attack ads on Meg Whitman like daily. I watch Colbert Report online, get a bobble head meg ad. Listen to the radio and I hear people bashing on Meg Whitman. I watch hulu and I get the bobble head meg thing again. Honestly for 100m+ she's spent, her campaign sucks because I haven't heard jack fucking shit.

I read this too fast. Thought the title said "Brown says he'll pull attack ads if Whitman dies". Then I thought, I didnt even know she was sick...

Just think of all the billions spent on this election, and all the big screen 3D tv's that could buy. What a waste. Some people simply do have way too much money. And if they write a check for millions to elect some guy, how many millions do they expect back for their investment? Guess we will all find out the hard way after next tuesday.
ANd you thought you were angry and that things were bad now... hehe
