Brown says he'll pull attack ads if Whitman does; Whitman refuses
LONG BEACH -- At a remarkable forum attended by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his two potential successors, Democrat Jerry Brown said today that he would stop running negative TV ads if opponent Meg Whitman does the same.
"No problem,'' Brown said. "I will take down any advertising remotely construed as a personal attack."
No deal, said an obviously flustered Whitman, who was down 13 points in the latest Los Angeles Times/USC poll.
To the boos of the audience at the annual Women's Conference sponsored by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and wife Maria Shriver, Whitman said that "people need to understand'' Brown's failed record as governor and mayor of Oakland.
Many of Whitman's ads attacking Brown on those fronts have been widely criticized by news organizations and the non-partisan factcheck.org as false or distorted. The question was poised by the forum's moderator, "Today'' show host Matt Lauer. It was the first time Schwarzenegger, Whitman and Brown had appeared on the same stage together. And the meeting was expected to be more than a little awkward.
Oh, well. Too bad for California.
