I drove a brand new 2007 Impala SS a number of years ago that was thoroughly unimpressive.

Yea, a V-8 FWD is a bad idea to start with and then they had to construct it on an aging platform so they wound up with torque-steer 'a plenty and mediocre handling at best. You could probably pick one up for dirt cheap if you could stand it's many shortcomings. On a side note I'll through this in about GM, my car's driver's seat developed a crack in the frame rail, well out of warranty. I called the GM "goodwill" number and explained to the girl that since the seatbelt is attached to the seat if I were involved in a frontal collision I could be ejected through the windshield, strapped to my seat!. GM donated a new frame, ($675) and the dealer donated the labor, (4.5hrs) so I got a $1050 repair for free. At least they stood behind their mistake.

Did it have an engine or transmission failure?

No, he was referring to the silliness of a V-8 FWD layout that was based on the ancient Lumina chassis, these cars were well known for "torque-steer" when you stomp on it as well as poor handling.

No, it was just a piece of crap.

LOL, see, you have to think of it as an adventure with GM and FWD and torque-steer!, for more fun turn off TC, I did on my car and pulled out onto a 4-lane road that was damp as I gunned it, the car "crabbed" across all 4 lanes! what fun!, thankfully they were vacant..
