I have the Samsung 2010 (I think that's the brand/model) that I got for around $50 a few years ago from the Hot Deals. How much better would this be compared to mine?

I think they are pretty similar in statistics, but I think the Brother might be a little smaller.

Anyone know if this has any issues with Vista? Vista is not listed as one of the compatible operating systems.

Edit: NM, I went to the Brother website, their FAQ says Vista drivers included and that it is compatible.

Wow! Didn't know laser printer has become so cheap. It's more cost effective buying toner cartridges vs inkjet cartridges. I rarely ever use color. In for one.

Wow how much power do these use? I had assumed it was moderately high, maybe 50-100w, but the buy.com tech specs say 450w (!!!) while printing. How accurate is this?

Most laser printers use a lot of power... Reason? The Fuser (sp) has to heat up to a high temp. Basically it fuses the toner to the paper...

But, not to worry it goes to sleep mode and I wouldn't think it would use more then 5 watts in stand by. I'd say this is very accurate. Check out HP and others I've had a bunch and the lights dim everytime the thing fired up...

This ain't no ink jet.

Parents had this model and it is a work horse (was finally getting to the point where it needed a new drum after 3 toner carts) and a steal for this price....if I hadn't just bought them a new dell, I would be buying them one of these....

Sadly for the environment, it makes more sense for me to buy this printer and throw out my free after rebate inkjet than to spring for another set of cartridges. Good find, especially for those of us new to google checkout.

Please, speak for yourself. I buy all 5 cartriges for my Canon PIXMA ip4000 at around $4 or less with free shipping. The toner for this laser printer costs around $45.

5 inkjet cartriges last me around 3 months on average - sometimes more. Unless one toner lasts for more than 6 months it's not cost effective at all - at least for me.
I read somewhere on the internet that current inkjets provide print quality almost as good as lasers, so unless that's BS, I see no reason for wasting money on this thing even at such a low price.

Umm I bought one of these laser printers for my wife and she has been going a whole year now on same toner.

If an inkjet cartridge lasts you three months then you'll probably do two years on a laser toner cartridge (after the initial, low fill cartridge). Plus no more jammed inkheads (the bane of every Canon inkjet I owned). And if you have a HP inkjet like mine, then no cheap third party cartridges-it's either a messy refill or expensive cartridge from HP.

I picked up the 204N from OD on black Friday. Same printer but with networking. The print quality and speed are great for a SOHO printer but yes it sucks juice when you click the print button. My 750W UPS had a fit when I plugged it in for the first warm up. I read somewhere that a user hooked it up to a kill-a-watt and it measured a little over 900watts when printing.

Don't forget that you can refill the toner cart multiple times and not have to worry about the drum since it is separate. This model has a built in refill plug according to the toner refill site I order from. You will have to drain the waste hopper after several refills like other toner carts.

You're lucky that your inkjet cartridges are inexpensive. The vast majority that I see are more around $10-12 for the black and $30-32 for the black/color combo. If inkjets are so cost effective why do so many offices opt for the lasers?

Honestly, this is the first time I've seen anybody argued in favor of the inkjet vs laser when it comes down to cost over the long run. IT professionals will tell you different. Even back in the days when b/w lasers were around $600 you'll be hard pressed to convince them to install inkjets in the offices they support.

Well, I have to admit that inkjets are getting faster. But, they are still slow compared to Laserjets...

The plus side is that it does color and use less power. But the downside is if you get it wet it will smear.

If you hardly use your printer for like a few months then the inkheads will dry up but a laser printer never has this problem. I am sure one day inkjets will be the standard due to power alone. But until then I'll enjoy my Laser printers. :)

IT professionals don't pay for the ink out of their own pockets. For home users inkjets can be VERY cost effective if you take the simple precaution of checking replacement cartridge costs before buying and buy accordingly. A printer that costs a few bucks more up front and has cheap cartridges is much better than a giveaway printer with $30 cartridges. I'm using an old Canon and can get generic cartridges for $1 for black and $1.50 for color. Try getting that out of a laser.
