Brother HL-1440 Problems

I have had this printer for about six months now and I don't even think that I have gone through 500 sheets of paper. The problem is that every thing i print now has a greyish background the printer gives no errors i took the toner cart out and shook it and cleaned the clevis wire. But the documents keep coming out grey is there anything i can do to fix this problem short of replacing the drum or toner? If i can't fix it for free what do you think needs replacement the toner or the drum? Would either of these be covered under warrenty?

Your toner is shot. Brother makes these really poor quality toner cartridges, as you know they sell the printers dirt cheap and make money on consumables.
Warranty does not cover consumables.
Nice huh?

Same thing happened with my Okidata laser printer. The repair cost almost exceeded the cost of a new laser so I just bought a Samsung laser at a lesser cost. I've been very happy with the Samsung laser for a couple of years.

If you had a dirt issue, the problem would look extra dust particles on each page. You could try a little cleaning(which never seems to help) or print 10-20 blank pages to see if there is any improvement. If not, try another toner since they are reasonably priced if you happen to have a coupon . Unfortunately, knowing Brother, the issue is probably a bad drum. Brother laser drums are basically equivalent to Epson inkjet printheads. Some people have no problems, yet there are enough complaints for one to question to their quality. Since the printer is still under warranty, try contacting Brother first. Maybe you will be lucky and they will replace the drum. Your goal here is to convince them their product is defective and not attributable to user error.

Thanks for the response i tried cleaning it out and printing 25 blank pages but that didn't help. I'm trying to decide what i want to do right now does anybody have experience with those toner refill kits on ebay made for brother printers.

We have a Brother HL-1440 on our home network. Same problem :frown: We've printed over 2000 pages now, and lemme tell you: It gets a LOT worse. I'm not too happy with it.
