$199.98
- $40 off $200 in-store printable coupon
--------------------------------------------------------
$150 AC

SKU: 457459

To get this deal, you have to buy it in-store. If you go to the website, the price is $249.98 and there's a $50 code you have to enter to get the $199.98 price. This means you cannot apply another coupon.

Thanks Optoman and Rossman for pointing me to the $40 off $200 in-store coupon.

I'm really tempted to give my Brother HL-1240 to my sister (who knows when the drum/toner will run out???) and buy this.

At this price, you can treat the HL-1440 as a disposable laser printer. As others have pointed out, the drum + toner cost more than $150 so if you have to replace both, might as well throw it away and get a new one. :)

Disposable laser printer... I like this concept.

How about this. Instead of giving my current Brother HL-1240 to my sister, I keep using it until the toner/drum dies then sell it for very cheap. In the mean time I buy a new HL-1440 this weekend but don't use it for 6-12 months? Is there any harm in doing that?

That'll work fine. I still have a drum and a toner from 6 months ago sitting in my closet. I don't think they'll turn bad. Who knows how long those at OD, Fry's, BB, buy.com etc. have been sitting in the warehouse anyway.

Plus, you'll get a pretty good price on eBay too I bet. The guy who sells "factory sealed" HL-1440 (if you read his description you'll find he actually meant factory *refurbished* then sealed) on eBay usually get like $180 for them. He said it comes in a "brand new box" though. I bet he's not getting too much business these days since all the HL-1440 other people sell on eBay these days are marked "NEW". <end rant>

As far as I know, Amazon has the lowest price on the DR400 drum. It's $120 - $10 off $75 coupon = $110 shipped.

Buy.com has it for $107 but you have to add shipping, and sales tax as well if you live in California. Amazon doesn't charge sales tax for Californians.

RossMAN,

Since you are going to be charitable to your sister, we can allow you to proceed with this printer purchase. If you were going for the new 1440 to put next to your 1240, we would not have allowed you to proceed with this purchase. ;)

How can we find out how many pages have been printed? I don't see the count appear on the test prints. Am I overlooking something, or does this printer not offer that option?

Follow these simple steps to save $50 instantly:
1. Add the Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer (Item No. 457459), from below, to your on-line cart.
2. Use this coupon code at checkout: 68078. Offer valid 2/2/03- 2/15/03.

There might be a problem using the $50 off $200 online. The price is only going to drop after the coupon. You usually can't apply another coupon on top of this one.

Edit: This is from the Staples website.

If you can get this in store then the price should be $199. There is a coupon that is printable for 40 off 200 and you can use in store. That would be $160 +tax which isn't that bad.

Optoman, is the $40 off $200 coupon at chubby wallet? I didn't see it in the usual "in-store printable staples coupon" thread there.

To stack the special promo code for the printer and the generic $50/200 code online, your order total has to be at least $449.

Mine was easy - I printed out 30,000 pages. 60 500 sheet reams. I don't know of any printer function that does the same thing

Thanks for the follow-up. I know some HP printers allow you to view the page counts because the machine keeps track of them. However, the Brother doesn't appear to have this option. I believe the drum has some form of internal counter which will trigger the drum light to come on when it requires replacing. I've found a procedure on the Internet for resetting the drum, but that's all I can come up with at the moment.

The street prices on this printer have really dropped since December . Is it about to be discontinued or is it just the competition from the other low priced Samsung ML-1430 and the Minolta model# ? which us the integral toner -drum unit ( vs serate in the Brother ) ? BTW- I know that the toner cartridge rebuilders frequently have problems with rebuilding the brother drum units - many won't do it .

does any know if you can print on both paper sides with a laser? I grabbed the Lexmark E210 a while back ( for a cheapie), and if I try to run the 2nd side of a brochure through, I get black smearing on the edges. Prints clean if I only do a single side, though.

FWIW, the manual duplex feature on the HL-1440 works fine for me. I use it to print Oracle documentation.
