Hi everyone,

I noticed a problem with my HL-1240, whenever I print, I notice that the paper is a little bit grayish. i.e. when I print something from word, the text is there...it's just that the paper itself isn't white...the paper is a very light gray. What do I do?

Thanks for your help.

Hopefully, your problem is a little dirt that eventually goes away. On the other hand, if you notice a particular pattern or imprint on each page that get progressively worse, then you have toner or drum problem. More often than not in this case, the $150+ drum needs replacing. People have been complaining about Brother drums for years.

The drum gets replaced every time you change the TONER Cartridge.

Its likely that the CORONA Wire is dirty.

To clean it, remove the TONER Cartridge and carefully turn it over (on a piece of paper to catch spent toner)
There is a TAB that slides from Right to Left. Gently move it back and
forth a few times (remember to return it to the same spot - HOME position).

Re-install the toner cart into the printer and run a test page.
(hold down control panel button and power on - hold until DRUM lite comes on- release-press again)

Good luck as I have found out that cleaning rarely works. Consumer Brother laser printers have always had seperate toner and drums.

From Staples:

Brother TN-430 Black Laser Cartridge - $50.99

Brother TN-460 Black Laser Cartridge - $71.39

Brother DR-400 Drum Unit - $152.99

Thanks everyone...I've decided to get the samsung 1710, instead of going through the trouble of buying toner (70 bux), and then finding out that it's the drum (150 dollars). I'm just going to get the 1710 for 100 bux instead.

Never going back to Brother...EVER.

I'm in the same boat - got the same model Brother.

Of couse, fortunately for me, I got my Brother printer for free, so I'm not out anything, but I'm thinking now that the reason I got if for such a great price is that someone else had already done the math and arrived at the same conclusion as you.
