wetcat, 512MB isn't really enough if he wants to do video editing.

He never said anything about gaming, so why does he need a 6800GT? Sure I love mine, but if you arent gaming it isnt worth spending the premium price when a 9800pro is half the price and more than enough for most people.

Rather than spend $400 on a card, spend $200 and put the other $200 into an A64 and/or RAM.

All that being said, if he isn't gaming and wants to get into movie editing, he may wanna think about an intel. yes I know, i love AMD, but my system is for gaming.

Let's try something like this...

CASE - Antec Life Style case w/ 380W PS - $99
DVDRW - NEC 8x Dual Layer DVD+/-RW - $77
HD#1 - 120GB Western Digital 7200RPM 8MB cache (IDE) - $84
HD#2 - 36GB Western Digital 10000RPM Raptor - $118
KEYBOARD/MOUSE - Logitech Wireless Duo - $69
RAM - 2x Mushkin 512MB PC3200 - $158
MONITOR - Samsung 170N 17" LCD - $369
MOBO - Asus P4C800 (875 chipset) - $160
CPU - P4C 3.0Ghz - $223
SPEAKERS - Creative Labs SBS450 4.1 speakers - $43
VIDEO CARD - MSI ATi 9800pro - $197
TOTAL (w/ shipping from newegg) - $1652

You could shave a little off by getting a cheaper keyboard combo or getting a 2.4 or 2.8 CPU.

Video Editing? Get a PowerMac G4:

$1,199.00 (Educational price for students)

1.25GHz PowerPC G4
1MB L3 cache
256MB DDR333 SDRAM
80GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo Drive
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro
Includes both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9

with a
NU 17" 16ms LCD (w/built-in speakers), $339

There ya go, a great G4 video editing rig!

not a lot of video editing. Like home movies and stuff. He doesnt know what hes talking about . Ill prolly get him the pinnicle maker

yea running 2.5-2.6Ghz on an AthlonXP (barton core 640KB) of total cache will be more cost effective for sure. If you can also run your entire Front Side Bus at @ least 217Mhz, you're system should be pretty good 🙂.
