How much does the toner go for? Is it just one or one for color and another for B/W?

Right now, black is $40 and the three colors are $47 each at Newegg, with 20% off of that for the next couple days it looks like.

Brother has long life toners that cost more, TN115 instead of TN110, at a higher cost. Whether those would work out to be cheaper per page I don't know.

TN110s are rated at 2500 pgs for black, 1500 for colors.

I'll point out the 4040CDN version is like 230ish on newegg at the moment, so if you really need the duplexing...

Has anyone out there ever tried toner refill kits, or do they just not work?

Just a word to the wise that Brother is notorious within the industry for premature shutdown of toner cartridges in its color laser printers. At the end of the day, any money saved on a Brother laser printer will be far exceeded by the money you will be forced to spend on replacement toner cartridges.
