All prints have a solid black bar running up one edge of the page. I'm assuming it's just a simple case of replacing the drum, but before I purchase a new one, is there anything else that should be considered? The toner assembly is separate from the drum assembly in this printer.

That's an old Brother printer and the drum is only rated for 15,000 pages. I'd say it's time for a new drum or printer.

I'm not a big fan of obsolescence; if a piece of equipment is working fine (or is economically repairable) and still suits my needs, I see no reason to replace it. This isn't my primary printer (I have a standard B/W laser printer for that) and it probably hasn't printed more than 1000 pages since it was new. I have no objections to replacing the drum, I just want to ensure that that's what it needs to fix the problem.
