The system I pieced together to do only RC5 is dying, the hard drive has lots of bad sectors and if it ever gets rebooted it needs a surface scan to get it to load windows, the surface scan takes about three hours 🙁

If anyone has a spare lying around I would appreciate it if you could donate it to the cause.

You can see the frankencracker in the first pic on my web page, I posted a bunch of pics of my messy computer room in o.t. 🙂

It is on the desk in the first pic, it is the one with the cd hanging out the front, this is an A.T. cas with an atx board in it, if you look closely at the bottom of the case in the front you will see the power supply sitting at an angle on the case floor 🙂 it is a c366@566 doing about 550 keys/day

I think I saw that thread, something about mess right?!? 😉

Anyway, if I don't remember totally wrong you have a network right? Why don'r you simply stash some old NIC in there and run Klinux? That way you aren't dependant on a HD at all, and you can leave it cracking knowing that it's got a very stable OS to run on...

Just my $0.02

Slacker,

I dunno if it would do the trick for you, but I think I have an older Western Digital 340 Mb that I can spare. I'll have to go digging to make sure that's what it is, but drop me an email if you're interested.

I dont know about the klinux thing, seems like it could be a pain to get set up, this box has win98se on it now, no monitor, I control it using desktop sharing in netmeeting, it has a nic in it and uses my cable modem to fetch and flush.

When it is left alone it will run fine, I had it running for over a month without rebooting, but I was cleaning up last night and when I picked up the power strip I grabbed it by the end with the switch on it, CLICK 🙁 turned it off 🙁 went to restart and same as the other two or three times it reported a data error reading drive c , I have to do a surface scan which takes forever and turns up lots of bad clusters, I dont even let it finish completely, when it gets to the last cluster with data on it I stop it, it takes about three hours to get to this point at 83% it looks like every one of the last 17% are bad as well as over a hundred clusters in the first 83%

If no one has one to spare I will take a look at the used computer place this weekend and see if they have something around a gig for $10.00 or so.
