My grandfather died at a very early age due to smoking. Needless to say, I didn't get to spend much time with him that I remember as a kid. Beyond that, he served in World War II and got in some pretty heavy $hit over there, or so we were told by many people other than him. Like many WW2 vets, it didn't seem he wanted to talk too much about his time during the war.

Anyway, we do know that he was awarded a Bronze Star for valor. My grandmother, who died shortly after him did say that he rushed a German machine gun bunker under heavy fire and tossed a grenade inside. During his rush across the area of battle, supposedly he stepped on a land mine and was left with shrapnel in his back for the rest of his life.

I would like to know how to research such a thing and find out what really happened. I have every reason to believe this story is true because I've seen the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart that he kept buried away in his personal belongings that we found after he passed away from cancer. Does anyone know how to find out this kind of information? Please help.

Help me ATOT, you're my only hope. ;)

My grandfather won the Military Medal in WWI (One of England's higher honors). The records were lost in the London Blitz in WWII so we will never know what he did to earn it. :(
