I got a bill from UPS for an item I had shipped from Canada to myself here in the states. Is there anyway to defer that payment to the shipping party? (I purchased an item from notebookreview.com and he is the shipper).

It is only 23$...but I don't think I should be the one to have to pay that.

What would happen if I was not to pay it too?

dang cheap canadians!

You want to defer the payment to the shipper. And the shipper was... you?

don't blame the poor Canucks... this happens both ways.

there is no effort on behalf of the shipping co's to inform the shipper or shippee about these charges. brokerage fees are BS in my opinion.

I got an invoice from FedEx for a PS2 that I had received 6 weeks earlier, asking for over $50 or 50% of the item value! We contacted FedEx and they gave us the run-around. Allegedly the collection agency is to follow. Not sure how it will all pan out but good luck.

Just don't blame the shipper, blame UPS

my weak rant:

I don't really see how brokerage fees are BS. Maybe they are a bit steep for some items but there is still a good bit of work done to get items across the border.

If I was at home and had access to the invoice, I would break down what exactly they are charging me $50+ for.

Trust me, brokerage fees are bullshit. The shipper should AT LEAST be informed that these charges will be levied at a later date, regardless of who has to pay.

Since I deal with the paperwork involved for them daily I understand what they are for. Who do you think should pay them?

I called UPS and they said he had the option of paying it, but declined. I guess he could have at least told me about it.

The UPS fellow said that if he declared the item under 199.99$ there would be no broker fee of 23$....go figure. He even said UPS paid Canadian something or other, and that is why they are looking to get this fee back.

I think I will pay it, but I will do so with my sad money, not my happy money.:brokenheart:

That's great, I'm glad you're an expert on it - congrats. I don't give a crap who pays them. They should be paid for up front, not weeks after the damn fact. When I pay a certain amount for an item, "shipped", I shouldn't be getting a GD invoice 6 weeks later. That's pulling one over on the shipper and me too. He had no idea and neither did I. Now collection agencies? Please, you gotta at least concede that the system is wack. I concede I am biased because I am personally getting bent over but it just does not seem right to me. If they could simply explain the fees to me, I would be happy to pay them. However, since you can't explain bullshit, they get a f*cking brain fart every time someone asks them "can you explain these fees to me please" and no I don't want your explanation even if you work for aforementioned companies. I want the GD pricks on the phone to furnish the GD info.

See now you got me all worked up! :p

I don't understand this brokerage fee crap. You pay up front to ship an item from Canada to the US. You've paid for the service. How the hell can they back bill you for something you've already paid for and they've agreed to do?
Pretty sure when I shipped a package to my girlfriend in Spain when she was studying abroad, it was all paid for up front.

1. Yes the shipper has the option of paying a brokerage fee, but why should he have to pay more out of his pocket to get the item to you? He could've just charged a higher shipping cost I guess, to cover it, but it's hard to know up front what/if the fee will be.

2. It has to do with customs, so you can't just not pay it, unless you want UPS to report you to the government.

3. If he had declared the item under 200.00 and it was in fact worth more than that, then that is fraud, and if they had bothered to open it up and check, they could've discovered that, and both you and him would've been party to that little crime. Hence he probably put the real value on the item, hence a small fee.

4. This is about the 100th post about this exact same topic, and every time it comes down to paying attention when buying/shipping outside of the country, it's YOUR responsibility to know these things. It might've been nice if the shipper had warned you, but like I said there's no guarantee the fee would've been charged, it sometimes is and sometimes isn't, depending on the item and the value and other factors, and since it's an extra cost involved in the shipping then the buyer is the one effectively responsible for paying it.

This gave me a great blackmarket business idea. I will have Illegal French Canadians cross the border with electronics and ship them once in the US. WeWe will make millions.

There are agents(companies) that pay you to carry luggage/package if your traveling empty-handed

but then how could I answer the tough questions at the ticket counter? "Did you pack this bag?"
