Broken/unplayable DVDs from Netflix?

I've been a Netflix customer for several years now, and although, at one point they seemed to have a problem with DVDs that came in heavily used and lightly scratched, the overall quality was never an issue. During this week, however, I received three discs, and all of them had an issue:

- first DVD arrived broken, like it was smashed with a hammer: disc pieces were barely holding together by the top layer. Mailed it back and asked for a replacement
- replacement arrived. With a big wound-like scratch in the middle. Had to skip a couple of scenes, but the experience was spoiled anyway, so I didn' ask for a replacement.
- another DVD arrived. Again, broken. Not a scratch, not dirty: just broken from center to outer rim...

I just wish they did a better job checking what they receive and mail out...

I've had 2 out of about 15 arrive broken. I think they did some math and figured that it's more profitable to spend $0.37 on shipping and risk the broken disks than it is to package them securely and spend more on shipping.

also, have experiences with 2 broken dvds in the past, just like a big crack. was baffled why it wouldn't play until i looked at it. had popcorn all ready to go too. what a let down.

and I've 3 lost dvds already, 2 after I mailed them back, and one never came.
I wonder what the limit is, I guess it depends on how many total dvds you've ever rented.

maybe they should change the envelope. would be thieves (usually low life drug user hippie scums) knows that there's a dvd in there that can sell for a couple bucks.

Netflix probably have a deal with the distributors to get them for cheap, however I think some of the dvds are rare and can't be replaced. (for example, some Ranma series)

This has been happening to me a lot lately. 2 or 3 a month it seems.

I'm not entirely convinced that it's always the mail system. The amount of stress needed to break a DVD should leave some sort of mark on the envelope but most of the time there is no sign of damage at all.

its usually pretty obvious to them very quickly that they got a broken disc..mainly cuz people tend not to like recieving em and report right away to get their replacements. i blame the mail system.

i guess some punks at ur mail center are really abusing the mail bad.

as for lost discs. mine are obviously honest reports as they are the sh*ttiest movies imaginable lol🙂

I work at a USPS mail sorting facility and can confirm that CD's and DVD's are routinely eaten by the sorting machines. The machines sort at 40,000 pieces per hour, have 90 degree turns, etc. If the address label is still legible, we have no choice but to deliver it as is.
Blockbuster's yellow/white rental DVD's are really bad for the machines, more than netflix IMO. I heard they are testing a new envelope.
We used to sort the Netflix by hand but there are so many now!
