Backstory: I was in Boston last month attending the LinuxWorld expo. On the way to the convention center, I stopped at a staples to check on some stuff there. In the parking lot I found a Sandisk Cruzer mini titanium 512mb thumbdrive. Unforunately it had been crushed by a person or vehicle. I thought it may still work so I took it.
I tried it out on my laptop. The thumbdrive lite up for a minute but would not be detected by windows. I unplugged and plugged back in several times. No luck. Finally it just stopped lighting up totally.
I contacted Sandisk to see where they stood on warranty replacement or repair. Neither was available to me in this case. So a couple weeks back, I decided to just crack open the case. It didn't work so why the hell not.
Anyway, here are some pics I took:

the whole thumbdrive taken apart. The case was already cracked. So I just finished it off. Part of the case was glued together with some type of putty. It was really tough sh!t to break though.

the chip in the upper left hand corner. I was told it was an oscillating crystal. The lower righthand corner of this chip is cracked through. For those that can't read the chip it says "TXC MmOG 12.000". It also may be "TXO". Hard to tell.

My question: anyone know where I can get this chip? Yeah, it is surface mounted and will be a bastard to resolder, but I have nothing to lose if that chip costs nothing to get.
TIA

A 12Mhz crystal should be trivial to get. Try Digi-Key, possibly even RatShack, or "You-Do-It" electronics, it's not too far from there.
I'd say you might even be able to rip one off of an older motherboard, but most of those were 14.3Mhz or something around there, and not 12Mhz exactly (Which is likely used to clock the USB 1.1 interface, at exactly 12Mbit/sec.)

Edit: Now that I think about it, an older dead mobo, with built-in USB 1.1, might also have a matching 12Mhz crystal too. Even something as old as a Socket7 board with USB might do. Happy hunting! :p

Buy a 16Mb drive that's free after rebate, and remove oscillator.
Resolder said component on 512Mb.
Profit.

bgmicro.com has a 12MHz oscillator for $1.50 but it may be a full sized one (no pic) - that's a miniature on that thumb drive.
