Fallout 3 PC DLC broken
Second time in a row - what's going on Bethesda.

Reports suggest that the PC release of the Fallout 3 DLC Broken Steel is - ironically - broken.

Some users are reporting an error message when installing the content.

That could be linked to missing files as the download size doesn't match up to supposed official size of the download.

Bethesda is investigating. This is the second time there have been problems with a DLC release for Fallout 3. It seems like someone at Bethesda isn't doing their job.

The publisher is said to be investigating the problems.

One wonders if we'll hear of problems with the Xbox 360 version today.

It appears to have been removed from Games for Windows Live. http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/4046.aspx

Hopefully, it will be back up later today.

Update 5/7/2009: Broken Steel is back up on Games for Windows Live.

According to Bethesda - yes.

Doesn't really surprise me. Bethesda seems more into milking every last penny from their customers with this poor quality DLC garbage rather than actually releasing anything worthwhile.

In a statement just sent to VG247, Bethesda?s confirmed a Games For Windows Live DRM issue is causing problems with the PC version of Fallout 3 DLC, Broken Steel

?We?re seeing the same error, which is a Games for Windows Live DRM Install error,? said a spokesperson for the firm.

?Microsoft is working on fixing it, and we?ll let everyone know once we?ve verified it.?

The statement went on to say that the Xbox 360 version is also experiencing difficulties, and server-synching and new Achievements to blame.

?The Xbox Live servers don?t seem to be fully synched yet with the additional Achievements,? said the rep.

?This should fix itself automatically soon. People won?t lose any achievements.?

What a joke Games for Windows Live is.. Didn't they also have issues with that shitty system when the game was first released?

Last one was busted too. The patch came out weeks later.

Ah damn, I was interested in this one, and was going to pick up 'the Pitt' at the same time.

The latest GTAIV patch broke my saved games because of Windows Live.

How ironic the DLC is called BROKEN steel... :D Eh - once they manage to iron out the bug -I'm looking forward to playing this as it's suppose to increase level cap and add a few nifty things to the game [I still have a ton of exploring to do yet].

I haven't even seen it on GFWL yet. They took it down before I got up (west coast), and it's been unavailable all day.

Someone welcome me to a few years ago...

I just bought Xbox points in preparation for downloading this thing when it's back up, and working properly. Wow, what a bullshitty system. I need 1600 points for two packs, but have the option of buying them in 500 point blocks. What the hell am I going to do with the extra 400. I guess I could buy another 500, and pick up the next add-on, so I'm only left with 100 extra points.

They better price the hard copy, retail expansion for 'The Pitt' and 'Anchorage' higher than $20 in Canada because I'm paying $11.60 each on the marketplace.

Ok, back to my hole.

I agree. I own a 360 and have never bothered with DLC or downloadable games because of that BS points system. I understand it's in place for kids to be able buy stuff and for the system to be easily usable by people in other countries and whatnot, but it's completely stupid to be forced to purchase more points then what you plan on buying.

Let us buy the exact points we need for a specific game or DLC content.. Why is that not possible? Seems simple enough, but leave if up to MS to change a simple concept into an ass backwards disaster.

Well, Microsoft probably thought of it this way:

Make everyone have an extra 400-ish points lying around at one time, so around $4. Multiply that by 1 million subscribers or whatnot, and that's at least $4 million sitting in the bank, being invested, earning interest. Bastards...

Agreed about MS points. They should at least link it to one of the major global currencies. Say, 1 MS point = 1 USD or 1 EUR. 800 points = $10 USD is nonsense.

Edit: back on topic. Broken Steel still doesn't seem to be available on GFWL.

It's busted so it's still down. However, the French version is available on my (Canada) Marketplace. I could probably get by with it, but that probably means it doesn't come with the English language pack, which sucks.

It breaks my heart to see a once good company like Bethesda now falling this deeply into things like that. I stopped liking them and their consumer support with Fallout 3, that game is both their best and worst at the same time, and the negatives that game brings to the company's image far outweighs the positives. I still have hope that things will get better and that this Fallout 3 and DLC bull crap is only a very unfortunate period of their games development history.

And if my memory serves me well DLC issues with Bethesda started with Oblivion (referring to issues caused by Knights of the Nine), but at least back then there was no stupid Games for Windows Live problems on top of the DLC's own software issues, now with GFWL it doubles the negative perception in the consumers' mind.

Update

Microsoft has finally fixed the DRM installation problem experienced with the new Broken Steel DLC for Fallout 3 on the PC. Earlier today, fans were in for a disappointment when they ran into a ?cryptographic message is not formatted correctly? error causing the install to fail and the game to freeze up.

So far the French version is up and running, and the English version is expected to be uploaded later this evening.

Maybe this is a sign for them to move onto Steam? Who knows. Clearly the blame falls on the Games for Windows Live system.

Of course they did. MS is all about milking the most money out of their customers rather than providing products and services that work and are easy to use. Look at Vista and the mess that is with it's six different versions. What a joke.

I won;t be buying anything on that Games for Windows garbage it's just more hurdles to jump through before you can actually play. If it was all included in Steam then perhaps it may be acceptable- but in my case I have Fallout 3 on Steam then I have to sign in and buy a DLC in another system which has a flawed points system blah blah etc. No thanks.

This seems to be their MO as of lately. They're really bad about releasing a buggy and incomplete product, and then coming out with a polished Game of the Year version that has all the nickel and dime DLC included for the price of the original game. Not exactly the best way to retain customers or at least make them want to buy your game on day 1 for sure.

Welcome to the present. The PSN just revised the way you purchase things now too. You used to be able to just purchase whatever you wanted on a credit card tied to the account for the exact purchase price. Now you have to load money on there in minimum $5 increments and everything is priced as $x.99, which guarantees change left over. An either/or system would be nice. Either use a credit card for the exact purchase price, or use points if you don't have credit card.

I was wondering where all my save games went. I haven't played GTA in a few months but I'm pretty damn sure I had save games. I started the game up a few days ago and I had nothing.

The same thing happens in Fallout 3 if you hit continue before GFW logs in. The save games for logged in and not logged in are completely separate from each other. What a stupid bullcrap system.
