broken sound system

So my roommate just brought up a car, but none of the sound works.

He said the car hit a pothole and it stopped working. Someone else then tried replacing the fuse, which blew immediately so that person figured that it was a short circuit on the central part of the stereo system (tape, cd, radio all don't work).

Does this sound about right?
How can we check/fix it?

year, make, model, aftermarket equipment, i mean wtf are we dealing with here? For all i know the dude could be using an 8 track player and trying to shove CD's in it...
