Broken scanner?

Does it? 🙂

Our office has the HP 4400C (USB 1.1?).. it takes a while to warm up and scan the page. Will be upgrading soon and moving this old one to our branch office, so was wondering , will USB2 speed up scanning in any way?

... Any reason not to get a USB2 scanner?

USB2.0 wouldn't be the bottleneck if your system is slow.

but if your system is fast, then USB1.1 would bottleneck. I have my scanner on USB2.0 and it makes a difference i can see and feel. Especially on high resolution (large files)

 Sid59, thats exactly what I was looking for. Thanks

I'm looking at the Canon LIDE 30, it says USB1.1 everywhere except for the retailer's webpage... must be a mistake.
Next one up, the LIDE 50, is USB2.0 but about US$50 more than the USB1.1 model.

edit - system is a dedicated scanning station. Even though it's got an AMD Duron (TM), it has 384MB of RAM so system shouldn't be the bottleneck.

Get USB2 if you can. I can definitely feel a difference. 🙂

depending on how much, how often, and how defined the images need to be though.

direct subjective review for you:
friend and i have similar systems; he got the canon lide30, i waited for the lide50.
mine is much faster to warm up and scan than his

i picked up a Microtek ScanMaker 6000 at a local bestbuy for $150. i really wanted another canon but i was convinced by the lady working that area of the store. i wouldn't have trusted her opinion had it not been for the fact that i've seen her working the digital imaging department for 3 years now that i remember and she seems more than competent. Anyhow, I?ve been more than satisfied, I already scanned almost 4000 photos with it, all at resolutions larger than 4k x 4k pixels. It will scan a 8x6 @ 600 dpi in about 20 seconds, hreat quality, very happy.

I have the LiDE 50, and I love it, for what its worth. $80, no power brick, and great resolution.

Not the fastest scanner around, but fast enough for me.

I have the LiEDE 20 and it's AWESOME!
Better than any HP scanner I tried 6x its price. It was the only one to be able to actually render black properly.
I love that it draws its power from the USB bus.
Anyway, you seem to be falling into a trap.
USB 2.0 on a spec sheet does not mean 480mb/sec. It means 12mb/sec. What you want it to say on a spec sheet is USB 2.0 HIGH SPEED!

thats awsome that it doesn't need a power source. the next usb revision should boost the power provided to* ports. PSs are getting bigger and bigger anyhow, the ability to run products off usb power would make things so much easier, esp full size external hard drives 😀

OK, I went out and bought the LiDE30, gonna set it up tomorrow at work to replace a HP scanjet 4400C that sometimes only scans half a page. Everyone should be happy 🙂

Well that's certainly not what I wanted to hear! But thanks for the input. How much faster does yours warm up? And once it does warm up, any noticeable difference speedwise between the two in terms of the actual scan.

Hey now sounds like the HP piece o crap that we have! It's big, ugly, and likes to take a crap on the scans from time to time.

On the box, the LiDE30's specs are USB 2.0 Full Speed. It then it goes on to say (in smaller print) that "USB 2.0 Full Speed" = "USB 1.1 Equivalent"

So wtf? Why must manufacturers invent so many different terms for the same thing. I guess b/c it doesn't say USB 2.0 HIGH SPEED, it's not really USB2... correct?

from what i understand [having been messing about trying to solve a usb2.0 problem recently: usb "full speed" is just 1.1 going at 12mb/sec so yes, basically usb1.1 speed

as to the lide50 - sorry i havent got comparative times for you but yes scanning time is faster on my lide50 vs mates lide30...managable for the odd item but enough to get fingers tapping for multiple scans...

Correct.
Think of it this way:
USB 2.0 is just an update to the spec as USB 1.1 was.
USB 1.1 did ad some features yet devices which worked with 1.1 controllers but didn't support the features could still be advertised as "USB 1.1 compatible"
This is the same thing.

Aside from the low signal setting (mouse-keyboard we're going to ignore that here)
There are two forms of USB 2.0:

USB 2.0 full speed - this is USB 1.1. It is used by manufacturers to let you know that the device will work with a USB 2.0 controller. It's also probably intentionally misleading.

USB 2.0 high speed - this is real USB 2.0

People wanted USB2 and the people who sold stuff only had USB1.1, so the USB group changed the naming to trick consumers into buying things that were USB 1.1, which is crooked IMO. How in the hell can Full be less than High? Anyways, its been documented a lot on the web.

Yup, I figured it out thanks to everyone in this thread...

USB2 Full Speed != USB2 High Speed.................

at the USB consortium!

Anyways, I'll probably just stick with the LiDE30 model. Like I said, it should be a big step up from our existing 4400C 🙂

Ugh.

I opened it up and noticed a small scratch on the top of the lid. Glass was noticeably dirty. Other evidence points to this as being used. :| Fine, if it works okay I'm not going to bother taking it back to the shop.

I installed the drivers and did some scanning of B&W documents (using color mode). I've noticed that there are rainbow patterns of colors where it should have been solid black horizontal lines.

Now I know I should be using "Black & White" mode for these documents, but there shjouldn't be these rainbow-ish colors around. Heck they didn't even appear on the old scanner. ..so.. is my scanner broke? 😕

I've never experienced that before. Canon does use the best tech for scanners though. Not sure what to say. Higher resolution scans always reduce problems like that though.
