Broken Samsung GNex, what to get?

So my wife's GNex on Verizon just broke, won't turn on at all. If you plug it in there's a white battery logo that shows the charge, but it will not power up. It got a little wet over the weekend, tried the "dry rice in a ziplock bag" trick and while it seemed to have extracted some water out, it did not fix the phone. Any advice on how to get our pictures/videos off the phone would be great, but I'm guessing we are SOL.

We are both off-contract with Verizon service, me with a dumb phone, no data plan (Palm Centro) and her with GNex unlimited data, which we need (phone is our only source of internet at home currently).
From what I’ve read I think we can “upgrade” my line with a new 2-year contract, and then switch the phone over to her account, and keep the unlimited plan, but I’ll have to see what Verizon says.

So we’re looking for a phone with Verizon, to keep the unlimited plan. We’re not glued to android necessarily, but we need a way to USB and wifi tether to our computer and tablet at home, and I’m not interested in rooting/jailbreaking, so to my knowledge the iPhone is out, as is a WinPhone. If there is a way to wifi tether without hacking, please let me know, we would look into an iPhone 5 or Lumia 928, as I like the higher quality cameras in those two (particularly the Lumia). With Android, we’ve been using the PDANet/FoxFi app.

Among Android choices, I’m looking at the Razr HD ($99)/Razr Maxx HD ($199), Galaxy S3 ($99)/4 ($199), Droid DNA ($199). I’m leaning towards the Razr HD, as it’s a tad smaller at 4.7” than the Samsungs/HTC, in the lower $99 price range, and appears to have the best battery life except for the Maxx version. I don’t think the extra $100 is worth the extra battery life for the “Maxx” version, maybe $50 but not $100. Also HTC phones tend to have trouble with the Wifi tether aspect of Foxfi, so I’m a little leary of the DNA because of that. Also the DNA doesn’t have a mSD card slot, so that’s another drawback.

Thoughts?

Used VZW GNex's can be found for ridiculously cheap, like in the $150 or less range. If she likes the GNex, might as well find her a replacement and not dick around with contract upgrade issues.

Galaxy S4 or Razr HD or Razr Maxx HD. There isn't really a reason to get an S3 or Droid DNA. The Maxx has double the storage and a much larger battery, not just a larger battery.

The thing with the Maxx is it doesn't matter how you use the phone you won't feasibly run out of juice if you charge it nightly. That kind of freedom is something no other phone has and it can completely change how you use the phone.

S4.

Because of the smaller bezel on the Samsung, the RAZR HD is only fractionally narrower (69.6mm vs 67.9mm) -- it's also actually thicker. You're also limited in battery capacity unless you buy the MAXX, whereas the S4 you can swap to an extended battery if you want to go that way.

The RAZR also has 1gb RAM, which is likely to be the limiting factor going forward -- even the S3 has 2gb.

Perhaps most importantly, the S4 also has LTE on the AWS band, which will be Verizon's next big rollout.

EDIT -- it also has the best smartphone camera ATM...

Either go all the way and get the Galaxy S4 or get a used Galaxy Nexus for $150.
All the remaining phone options you listed are not worth it.

FWIW going on 8 months with my Maxx HD and I love it. If I had to buy a new phone on verizon right now it would still be my choice.

Problem with a GNex was the battery life was pretty subpar, I'd like an upgrade in that respect. It wasn't bad enough to replace it while it was working, but since it is broken and we do need to replace it, I'm definitely looking for something with better battery life. Feels like we had to plug it in all the time. That was with extended batteries as well (I think they went "up to" 1800 mAh).

Looks like the Droid Razr HD also now has a $50 MIR, make it $50 AR. All else being equal I think I like the S4 a little better, but not for 4x the cost ($150 more). Probably picking up a Razr HD tonight, will let you know how it goes with the service switch.

Amazon wireless has the note 2 for like 99.99 right now. My note 2 makes it all day easily on a single charge too.

I would probably go for a Gnex since you know it fits what you need and wouldn't effect your contract at all. If not, then go for an S4 if you know Foxfi works for free tethering on it. That app did not work on my Rezound (HTC), like you said so a DNA should be out, not that its worth it anyway over what else you listed.

The Gnex is a great phone, and a slickdeal for what it goes for these days. My GF has one and I'm surprised at how 'new' it still feels, thanks to it being a google phone with all the latest updates of course. Makes my rezound seem like a generation behind, even though they came out at the same time :(

This, I'm very impressed with the Note II, and the Amazon upgrade is a great price. Especially if your wife is going to use it and carry it in her purse.

Samsung is getting very close to the perfect Pocket PC, you can connect most newer Samsung phones via MHL to HDMI equipped TV's and monitors, and pair them via BT to keyboards and mice.

Go with the razr or maxx. Stay away from the Gnex at this point. Especially with it's less than sub par battery.

Btw, at least on Samsung phones, this widget turns on the native tether while bypassing the Verizon subscription check.

Just make sure you buy the phone outright (unsubsidized) so you can keep your unlimited data. In fact I would not even involve Verizon at this point just buy a VERIZON 4g phone from Ebay/amazon/newegg. Then simply insert the sim card from your old GNEX.

good luck

Bought the Droid Razr HD yesterday. Was able to buy the phone subsidized under my plan, then transfer over to her non-contract plan. Will let you know our first impressions in a few days.

Thanks for the input guys!
