broken plextor 16x burner?

i have a friend who is having a problem with his burner. his burner just stopped working, he can still read cd's..but he cant burn any cd's. so i went over to his house, and i found out that whenever you insert a cd, the plextor's light is constantly on, even when the disc isnt being used. he is using win2k, so i went to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller settings, and for his plextor, under "Current Transfer Mode"...there was no transfer mode.

anyone know what the problem is? i checked to see if any ide ribbons were loose, but they all looked ok.

I think the light is supposed to be on after you put in a CD. After inserting a CD into my 16x, the green led goes on and stays on.
