broken digital camera help needed

Yo Anandtech!

I know alot of people here who seem like they know alot about camera's and stuff. I found myself traveling recently with my Canon Powershot SD100 camera that I bought used off an Anandtech Member and have been very happy with it since. However upon unpacking my travel-on back that I kept my camera in after flying I tried to use the camera and it is all messed up. (I think it might of been the Airport X-Ray machines), The problem is with the digital display on the unit whenever the camera is powered on the display stays black unless the lense is pointed at a light source. Even once the camera is aimed at a light source all you see on the screen is a smugged or scratchy purple/white/green set of colors, the camera operates fine using the flash when it should and taking the picture however the digital display does not display the picture correctly nor does it look like the pictures save correctly when taken, I have not been able to try to view the pictures off the memory on an alternate source to verify if they are actually taken incorrect or if it is just the digital display. Anybody have any idea's about what the problem might be? I know the camera is not worth much and you might say id be better off just throwing it away and buying a new one but im not exactly ready to buy one of the newer expensive digital camera's out whenever I was rather happy with mine... any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Sounds like the ccd on it went bad

Give Canon a call and ask em how much to fix it

I will ask the guys at work tomorrow how much it would be also

Thanks man im curious to learn about how much it might cost. While doing some googling i came across this forum stating that alot of the powershots have problems with ccd's (i don't know what that is exactly but their problem sounds exactly like mine)

I plan on calling Canon whenever i find some time within the next couple of days to see if it is possible for them to possibly fix my unit for free or little to no cost.

Ill update the post as more details become available.

Edit: throwing some links in here to remind myself about later reguarding this issue

^-------Malfunction:
It has been confirmed that the connecting parts of the internal wiring of the CCD used in affected products may become disconnected, especially if the affected products are stored or used in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. If this occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD normally in Shooting Mode, which may cause a distorted image or the absence of an image. This malfunction can be confirmed on the LCD monitor screen during shooting. The same malfunction also appears on the recorded image.

Canon's Response:
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, the products listed above exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if Canon determines that the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

Edit: Okay so far so good I put in the request via email and the next day recieved the UPS shipping label all I had to do is package the camera and print out and attach the printing label, tomorrow I will drop off the camera at a UPS pickup location and it'll be on its way, hopefully it is the CCD and they're able to fix it without charging me. Ill update the post with what happens.

Success! I emailed and had Canon send me out a pre-paid shipping label for the camera, sent it to them and they fixed it for FREE and sent it back, good as new, they never even cared that the camera itself was not under warantee anymore! awesome.

Yep. I had a Nikon 5700 with the bad CCD, and they took care of it at no charge, PLUS, cleaned and adjusted the camera at the same time.
