Broken AMD 754 Heatsink Bracket

Hey guys,

I got home today, powered on my PC and got a BIOS "cpu fan error". Opened up the case and the stock cooling fan is lying on the bottom of the case with one of the tabs broken off the bracket. Last time it was touched/moved was about 6 months ago when doing some dust cleaning, and I decided to use some arctic silver rather than the OEM heatsink compound.

I've done a little searching, and see that some aftermarket cooling fans come with their own brackets that replace the stock one, I was wondering if there's any cheap way to get ahold of another OEM bracket (since my fan still works fine). It was from an athlon xp 3200 with Asus K8V SE deluxe. It's over a year old, so no chance of factory warranty coverage (why I'm trying to go cheap with another oem bracket).

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Yes, exactly. The upper clip there that the heatsink clips onto for downforce was broken. It was made of black plastic exactly as you describe.

Gaw, I hate that, I had a P4 do that to me once. My solution was ebay 🙂 I don't know if a P4 renention bracket is compatible with a socket 754 board or not.

Does your bracket look like this? Linky (Picture its biggg sorry)

That is my old bracket from my Asus SK8N socket 940 board. Don't know if it would fit or not.

The P4 retension bracket can be had for a few bucks - pretty cheap but shipping costs more than bracket. Haven't seen the A64 bracket for sale, but besides Ebay you can post a "Want to buy" in the For Sale forum. People around here often use aftermarket coolers and many may have their old brackets collecting dust.
