Lumia 635 or 520/521. $50 or less and plenty fast and easy for basic stuff like contacts and email.

Anything for less? Gonna get a new phone on contract eventually anyway. Broken phone is ensured

Yep, I think if you had an android phone you can just add the details directly to the contacts website (contacts.google.com). I think MS does the same at people.live.com and would assume apple have something similar (I can't remember my appleID to check).

The Lumia 530 and 635 are both $30 on Walmart.com, and are as low as I would go for usability. The Optimus Fuel is the same price if you want a cheap Android phone. I had one for a while last year and it's not bad for a cheap, practically disposable phone.

I don't know what network you are on, but as a general recommendation just go for the cheapest Lumia or LG Optimus phone (KitKat runs quite well on the lower end hardware, unlike Lollipop) you can find that will work for your network if you need to use it with your mobile data and not just wifi. If you want to spend a little more, the Moto E is a good option and would be an excellent backup phone to keep.

Many feature phones can be as cheap as $10 and could probably work for just email and contacts, but they are way more frustrating and flaky than something Nokia/MS, LG, or Motorola made.

Motor E sounds nice, but isn't it prepaid and won't work with my network?I'm on Verizon but it's still prepaid

man, this is why i dont own a $600 phone.

i got the LG L70 from metropcs for $30. then pay $30 per month, quit any time. if the phone is damaged or stolen, im not gonna cry about it. works great for what i use it for: calls, text, internet, mail. dont care for games, taking photos, nor record vids.

I guess it depends on what you want from your device. If you want the latest OS updates, more memory to run your apps, faster CPUs etc. You really don't have much choice but to get the flagship phones or at least one that is relatively new.

Aren't your contacts stored in the cloud? Signing into google when you get your new phone should get you your contacts back. I'm

This is exactly it. Contacts are already backed up.

OP is right, this is a tech forum. OP is the one lacking the basic knowledge. Also, not the purpose.
