Broke my Chrome Orb fan . . . is it still usable without a fan?

One of the dang fins snapped off when I was swapping it for a FOP-38. I am going to be building a Duron 750 - not overclocked - system soon, and I was wondering if a fanless Chrome orb with a case fan or two would be sufficient to cool it . . .

I'm not sure, but probably not. Wihtout a fan, the c-orb heatsink is pretty much worthless.

I did the same thing and was able to attach a standard 60mm fan to the orb using clips from an old Global Win Socket 7 Heatsink. It actually worked better with the faster fan. Have since replaced it with a articooler, what a difference. Corbs are good for the price but they have weak fan blades.

<< err..
without a fan..
how do u think it is going to... get the heat out?....

Umm . . . by way of the 80mm case fan I was going to mount on the exhaust port under the power supply??? Many OEM builders (Compaq in particular) use fanless CPU heatsinks, and mount case fans near the CPU to exhaust warm air.

Ever seen the inside of a Dell tower system? they have this big plastic "tunnel" that surrounds the CPU and leads to the exhaust fan at the back of the system. Pretty neat.

Xerox, you live in Craig, Colorado don't you? I'm in Cheyenne and I'm about to get a PEP HSF for my Duron. If you can get to Cheyenne, I'll gladly swap a good Chrome Orb w/fan for your broken one. I'll use the broken heatsink on an old pentium system w/o a fan. That way you'll have a good heatsink and a spare fan. Email me and we'll work something out.

BTW my email is in my profile.

I am using a dead super orb with my Athlon though I have a 120mm fan blowing directly at it. The heatsink is still useable but you have to find someway of cooling the heatsink.

Though, my case is somewhat not like your ordinary case. the fan sits straight across from the cpu and memory and all three are lined together.

Best to replace the fan & heatsink. :)
