broke my ankle

I seem to have the worst luck with basketball this past month. About 1 month - 2 months ago, I broke my finger playing basketball. I just got comfortable with it enough to play again this week. I played 4 or 5 days out of the past week and yesterday I was going for a rebound and had some body contact in the air and came down on the side of my foot (right foot of course so no driving). I knew it was broken right away. There was a loud audible pop and I couldn't put any weight on it.

I went to the ER and they put a "Johnson Wrap" on it. I am on crutches for 3 weeks then if it is healing well, I will get a walking boot. I am on Oxycodone pills and I still have to get around to summer classes. Luckily my school has a van service that takes people with mobility + vision problems from place to place.

Ironically, I had never suffered any serious injury for all of my life until the broken finger just recently and now this. Makes me wonder if it is time to give up basketball... :p

I will say though that the first doctor I had in the ER was so cool. We joked around and he even quoted Star Wars and Tommy Boy. The others were pretty uptight.

Just don't be like the idiot that lives across the street from me. He busted his ankle playing basketball. Stayed off it for a week or two, then busted it again. It's been about three weeks since he did that, and it looks like he's going to have permanent damage, because he thought he was a big man who didn't need to listen to the doctors...

I am taking them seriously. I definitely don't want permanent damage or surgery. Thanks for the advice though.

I did that twice to the same foot about a year apart. The best thing to do is take it easy and don't rush the healing process. When you get cleared by your doctor to walk around again, slowly build up to running amd eventually start doing some pool types of exercises. The best thing I found to help strenghten the ankle was to do squats on sand or foamy surfaces. This will help stabilize the joint and the mucsles around the ankle. Good luck and be careful.

I did that same thing on May 12, 1998. I ended up landing on my ankle sideways. It was EXTREMELY close to breaking, but instead it just turned all pretty and black. It's still weak sometimes and I'll trip for no reason. :p
