OK, MEPIS 6.0Rc1 is on a Thinkpad T21 or T22 (PIII 750). All is well. Except using odd ports to go places. So...
1. apt-get remove guarddog. Yay.
2. Ohhh, suspend is integrated. Enable.
3. Shut screen. Open screen. lots of stuff flies by, X comes back. Again: yay.
4. Reboot...get surious ACK error, suggesting that X is trying to access video hardware still.
5. Forcefully shut down after several minutes of this error.
6. Machine POSTS, goes to the splash screen, starts services...then gives a single underline (cursor?) character in the to-left, clearly using the native res console frame buffer. The HDD then goes crazy for a few seconds (like something is being loaded), and then...nothing.
Anyone have suggestions for how to resolve this (w/o re-installing--or at least not reconfiguring)? I'm thinking the sleep thing closing the lid was the culprit.
