Broke down and bought an iPhone

So I broke down and bought an iPhone.

So now I looked at jailbreaking, but there wasn't many apps I would use. But what I do need is a good IM client. Any suggestions?

I was going to get the G1, but the tmobile rep said they don't sell it because they have no plans of 3G in our area. ATT has great 3G coverage in our area. So it was a no brainer.

Oh sorry, I ment a good IM client that supported MSN, ICQ, and Gtalk. Or really just msn and gtalk.

Right now i'm using the google talk gadget and that is neat, but I would like to have access to my MSN as well.

I generally do not buy software for my iPhone, so I can only tell you about the free apps. AIM is the only one I could get to work on a constant basis.

I would hope that all the pay IM apps work perfectly 😉

I looked at fring, Nimbuzz and Palringo, they are all free and look nice. But I don't like giving my info to 3rd party brokers.

BeejiveIM is a great instant messaging app for the iPhone, I highly recommend it.

The only reason I jailbroke was to have the app 'backgrounder'. Using this app, I can leave programs running in the background such as BeejiveIM, Rooms (IRC Client), Pandora Radio while I do other things. On an un-jailbroken phone, these apps will exit (therefore causing a server disconnect) until you next launch the app.

Yea, I played with backgrounder last night. It was neat. I don't think I have a use for it at this point. For the most part I won't need constant access. When I'm not at a computer I'm usually not in the mood to be constantly connected. I looked at the jailbroken apps, there wasn't many I would use. I mainly wanted the web browser, IM now and then, maps, email, and itunes/ipod.

I jailbroke my iPhone 3G for two reasons, themes and Intelliscreen.

Having my appointments on the lock screen was a huge thing for me. The added weather and e-mail was just a bonus. There are free alternatives to Intelliscreen, but none have the ability to show the actual appointment except Intelliscreen (afaik). I'm still in the 10 day trial, but I'll likely fork over the $10 for a license.

Another vote for BeeJiveIM.. it's pricey, but it does what it says it does. All the others were too buggy to actually be usable for me.

No support for sending pics at the moment, but as soon as they add that.. I'll be in heaven. Can't say enough good things about it. But the main reason why I like it is because I can be connected to my networks all the time. I don't have to answer them, but this keeps me texting for free, which is a huge plus.

I ended up jailbreaking afterall so I could sync my google calender over the air to my itunes calendar. Works like a charm. Still not sold on a IM client yet, but I'm getting there.

Ooooooo, how do you do that?

edit: nm, searched calendar in Cydia and answered my own question.

There are definite benefits to jailbreaking.. I just wish my iPhone didn't completely slow down when it's jailbroken. Ugh..

Just an FYI, after you install NemusSync, you can ssh into your phone and create a plist in /Library/LanuchDaemon/ (I think that is the path) and have it auto sync ever X number of seconds.

The NemusSync website has more details. Once that is done you never have to open the app again.

After I did that I used Boss Prefs to hide the Icon for NemusSync.

Just make sure you change the default for NemusSync to upload and download events. That way you can add via your calendar as well.

I decided I"m not comfortable with giving my gmail account info to a 3rd party. Especially my work account info (we use google for our work email and chat). So for the moment I'm using the gtalk web interface. I'm in the process of exploring the iphone SDK. I'm going to see if I can shoehorn libpurple into a useable chat client. Then with backgrounder I will have a good chat application for free 🙂.

I'm not a good objective-c developer though. C has never really been my forte. But if I can make it passable then I'll be happy.

By using gmail you are already giving all your info to a third party, another one probably isn't going to make that much of a difference.

If google steals my stuff my company can't fire me. Because they force me to use google.

If crazy unknown company giving me free proxy to google steals my stuff. I lose my job and may face legal action.

But, if you use google email, maybe you would be ok with giving me your username and password. I promise not to do anything with it, and I'll even give you a free service of backing up your email for you 🙂

Yes.. this is becoming more and more of an issue as more and more services use Google/Facebook/MySpace logins. It scares me because if someone gets ahold of one of those accounts, you're able to do more and more with their personal information everyday, as more sites add these login features.

I don't like having multiple logins, etc... but I much prefer it to having one master login for these sites.
