Got a flat this morning and as I was removing the lug nuts one of the studs broke off. How much should I be looking at to get one punched back in? Make and model of car is in my sig.

I remember I think sears wanted to charge me 50 to replace one. But really it's not a hard project. Is it the rear or the front. You simply knock it out and put the other one back through the back. You take usually about 5 or 6 washers and tighten them with a junk lug nut until it pushes it way back through. But you may have to end up taking off your whole rotor. Which means you have to take off your brake caliper bracket etc....

But that depends if you have disc or drum..

Was one of the studs rusted? It seems kind of young for a 98

A shop could replace one in about 5 mins with a lift, air tools, and the new part in hand. Did it myself lot's of times back in the day when I turned wrenches. I would call the dealer and expect to be charged something like .5 hours labor + the part.

I replaced mine for about $2-3 and 20min of my time. Hammer the old one out, put the new one on, and then thread a lug nut on and turn it to press the bolt in. It was a bit of a pain to keep the wheel from turning. Might want to put the rotor and caliper back on and have someone step on the brakes while you turn it, or use the emergency brake if it's on a rear tire.

Hmm, has anyone ever used a wedge when beating on the hub assembly, like when removing a stubborn rotor or lug bolt like in the example? I beat the shit out of my rotors to get them off when I was doing my last brake job. Hope I didnt damage the bearing.

At least you didn't do what I did...

I was tightening my lugs after changing brake pads and the LUG NUT sheared in half. Yes, the actual lug nut, not the stud. I had absolutely no way to get it off. My wheel was locked in tight to the hub even with the other 3 lug nuts removed. Never use cheap lug nuts, boys and girls!

Drill it out.
