I was messing around with a case fan and inadvertently stuck my finger in my cpu fan, thank god for cheap coolermaster fans otherwise I wouldnt have a finger tip :) There's alot of vibration because of the missing fan blade....it isnt rattling loose or anyhting and temps are fine, is that much vibration on the heatsink itself bad for the cpu?

Mind you its a steady vibration, not like its going to fall off anytime soon im just wondering. Also, any recommendations on a quiet-ish heatsink/fan for an xp1600? im looking at a volcano 6cu that seems about what im looking for. TIA.

OMG I did the same thing.

Umm I know exactly what you mean, but I wouldn't chance it, vibration on the heatsync is bad. Could crack your core, or fall off and such, and perhaps lose contact with the core. You could just purchase a new fan and keep the heatsync however.

Vibration is likely to shake something loose sooner or later, such as mounting points.

Make sure you get the 6Cu, not the 6Cu+. The difference in noise level is considerable.

Wait I don't understand, you must have hit your CPU fan really hard for it to break a fan blade, or was it on?!

Man if it was on, you shouldn't be "messing around" with case fans etc. You could have done something much worst...

Yes, people do it, but it is very foolish, I've seen way to many dreadful things happen.

You should be fine but I wouldn't leave it like that. Where it is vibrating your risk is higher than anything on the fan stopping. If your using it for a temporarily thing you should be able to break another blade off but on the other side of the one you originally broke the first. Every blade you break hurts the air flow more and more. But if you plan on using it for a while you do need to break the blade on the other side to help even it out more which should keep it from vibrating.

The CPU fan on my heatsink isn't deformed in any way, but, being the cheap Coolermaster unit that it is, it vibrates a bit much for my comfort. Is this vibration going to kill my motherboard eventually, or is it normal to have a bit of vibration from the CPU fan?

Your gonna get a bit of vibration from any fan. Its normal. It will absolutely not damage the mobo it is in more risk of damaging itself more then anything else. It could possible break one of the slugs on the mobo killing the CPU and possible the mobo. Thats why its important if you decide to upgrade your cooler go with something with a 3 slug clip instead of the single slug. I am using the Taisol copper based heatsink/fan and it rock IMO.

But it isn't very common for this to happen your more at risk of breaking a slug off the socket when you bump into your PC or something just jars your case hard. Anytime your moving your case around you need to be jental with it because of this reason.

Thanks for giving me a little peace of mind on this issue. Currently I plan to just get a [much] better HSF when I upgrade my processor (hopefully soon!). :D

np just remember to try to find a heatsink with a 3 slug clip(on each side) when you do upgrade. Of course the more the RPM's the fan spins at the more its gonna vibrate. I had a coolermaster once(the one with a thin 60mm fan) and it had a bit of vibration to it.
