Stop wearing them funny clothes on their heads. Or they could stop creating all of those no-go zones and forcing their religious laws on everyone around them. Oh wait that only happens in GOP fan fic.

There are long time Christian groups in the U.S. that continue to wear "funny clothes on their heads".

Assimilate to what? White America? Nothing wrong with Mexican American culture.

True, that. America has been recreating herself all along, from the beginning, achieving a new synthesis where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Agreed, but the whole works best when it’s "the whole". Not assimilating creates fragmented parts which isn’t good for the country in general.

Isn't it normal for immigrants to cluster together? I can't think of any that don't. It's a great aspect of some parts of the US. I'm an hour drive from experienceing tons of diffent cultures. We all rub off on each other which is what American culture really is.

Just about all of the Hispanics I worked with have been outstanding members of society.

Last welding shop I worked at there were was a hispanic welder, and a sand blaster / painter. Those guys worked their ass off.

Other shops I worked at it was the same thing. They never complained, never felt entitled, and were hard workers. They rarely, if ever, missed a days work.
And I bet they didn't fly to Florida almost every weekend.

Meh. So what if Cinco de Mayo in LA is analogous to St Patrick's Day in Boston?

The whole thing is ridiculous to those of us who grew up in places where some of our fellow citizens spoke Spanish at home. Hell- I grew up with people whose grandmothers often spoke Yiddish, Italian or Croatian a lot better than they spoke English. None of it really mattered because we all went to the same schools & did very much the same things in life.

Shee-it. The people raving loudest about immigrants are people who probably couldn't pass the American history test that green card holders have to pass to become citizens. You know- ignorant, and proud of it.

I'm definitely doing my part trying to get my wife to say things correctly when she orders our burgers.

I asked her what she'll say in the restaurant. She replied 2 pounds with cheese, no nickels..

So I just need someone assimilated enough to understand that's 2 quarter pounders with cheese, no pickles!

Why exactly are different opinions, beliefs, and lifestyles bad for the country in general? Why would it better if we were all the same?

I think it would be cool for Mexican culture to melt into US culture. It might help our culture to have a better work ethic, be happy with less, and appreciate opportunity more.

Gilette's advice realky did a number on some, lol.

The best part is how many of them after ranting and raving then try to go "their ad didn't even work!" or "missed the mark" and then I just laugh and laugh.

I wonder if Gillette will have to pay any taxes on all the rent-free space they're getting in the minds of conservatives now?

Gawd, I wish I could be a fly on the wall of the working class New England area where Gillette is a big employer.

Being reminded not to be a Dick really sticks in your craw, huh?

I get the strong impression he actually really wants a dick stuck in his craw. He reeks of a deeply closeted individual trying to rationalize his strict conservative upbringing with how he feels inside.

Assimilate? Ask black people how that's working...lol! The problem with the argument that Hispanics need to assimilate is that every time brown people move in to a white neighborhood, the whites flee and eventually the neighborhood is all brown-skinned.

It's hard for them to assimilate when the whites keep running away from them.

Maybe Republicans should try harder not to alienate all "new Americans"?

There's no logical reason why hispanics should "all be Democrats". I bet they aren't all liberal or left back in their (or their parents or grandparents) countries-of-origin. It takes a special effort by the Republicans to cause everyone who isn't an English-speaking-white-guy to turn against them.

Comments like Brokaw's come from a generation that also said "blacks should just get their act together". It's just passive-aggressive and does nothing to resolve any outstanding issues.

Yes, this argument that many hispanics are a very natural audience for conservative philosophy has been well illuminated over the years. The GOP is however determined to ruin their chances with them for generations though because they've decided tribal fear is more useful to turn out the base.

Where did he say different opinions, beliefs, or lifestyles are bad? He said not assimilating is bad. It creates divide - when we were previously known around the world as the melting pot.

Assimilation is a generational exercise. That, however, does not mean that people have to actively jettison their culture as a lot of people seem to think it does.
