i have a dell laptop AMD turion x2 1.6 ghz, ATI xpress 1150 chipset, it has an integrated broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller.

Whenever i transfer file (at max speed 100 Mbps), the cpu load will be about 80-90%
which is very high. i've seen other using only about 8-10%

so do u guys know wats the problem? Or its because broadcom chips are inefficient and draw lots of cpu load?

Thanks in advance

I'm not a big fan of the Broadcoms, but the 440 is pretty darn bad, but not THAT bad. Try and updated driver, and try an OLDER driver, to see if that makes a difference. Also, check if the CPU load is pushing FROM your laptop, or pulling TO your laptop (may make a difference). Also check the driver for advanced options, such as checksum offloading, see if you can tweak those and get better performance.

I cant find any broadcom from website other than dell, and the newest driver i get is 11/21/2006 (from device manager)
not much setting, only 4 that i could see

802.1p QOS = disable
Flow Control = disable
Speed & Duplex = auto
Wake Up Capabilities =Both

<<Also, check if the CPU load is pushing FROM your laptop, or pulling TO your laptop (may make a difference)>>
I dont understand pushing and pulling... but the computer slows down a lot, not responsive as usual

Looking/using your laptop:

push means you copy from your laptop to a remote machine

Pulling means opening a remote machine and copying files TO your laptop

HP D220 (black tower) uses the same chipset, you might see if you can download/install that driver by hand, and if it makes a difference. We have 220ish of those, and haven't seen this issue with those machines.
